I have recently been given a mountain bike (quit smoking 3 weeks ago and now I want to get fit) It has knobbly tyres. 26x1.95

I went into halfords the other day and he recommends slick or hybrid tyres, I ride mainly on the roads.

Well my question is, which brand and type can anyone recommend.

PS I am on a budget.

PPS What are MTB Tyres, yes I am new to this

If you're primarily riding on paved surfaces, most any tire with a slick tread will be an improvement over a knobby tire. I have used and like the Ritchey Tom Slick 26"x1.4" in the past, but there are plenty of other good tires out there. If you're on a tight budget, Halfords probably carries inexpensive generic tires for you to choose from. Because mountain bike rims are wider than road bike rims, I would not go thinner than about a 1.25" tire. Dependent upon your ultimate tire choice, you will also probably need to purchase thinner width tubes. Rated tube width can be smaller than the tire width, but not vice versa.

PS "MTB" is an abbreviation for mountain bike.

I have started using a bicycle to commute to work. It has not only saved me some dollars but has also been making me feel healthy.

I purchased a giant mountain bike a couple of days ago. I picked my bike from the Bike Shop Castle Hill in Sydney and found they were really helpful and knew their stuff. If anyone is interested their website is Bike Shop Sydney - Bike Shop Castle Hill (http://www.bikeshopcastlehill.com.au) They seem to have all makes of bikes so maybe worth checking out.
