H1N1 Vaccine

View Full Version : H1N1 Vaccine

I'm curious to see how many of you would take the H1N1 vaccine I am unsure of its safety and effectiveness. I recall the last time swine flu vaccination was attempted in the seventies it killed more people than the swine flu itself and was stopped immediately.

In 30+ years, immunology has come a long way. I'm not worried about it.

+1. The wife and I are both planning to get the H1N1 vaccine as soon as it's available. http://home.comcast.net/~lnthall7800/images/gif/bing.gif

I'm with you, Wire. We're inundated by too much medicine, too much marketing, too many corporation-whores who will, and do, sell poison to make money. This vaccine might be a good thing. But I have no reason to bet on it.

Here in Ohio they are saying that the vaccine will not be available for the general population until February! WTF, by then the general population won't need it anymore because we all would have had it.....and the survivors rejoice:rolleyes:.

There was a huge outbreak of the 'new' flu in my area. I usually got really, really sick when I got the regular old flu of yesteryear. This one did NOTHING to me all the while thinking I was going to die after listening to all the media hype. I got the little scratchy throat, mild cough, some sinus congestion, but it was soooo mild; I didn't feel weak, my hair didn't hurt etc. It may be bad for kids, but for adults its nothing. So FWIW if you like getting chemicals injected in you get the vaccine, but I skipped it and lived.

The vaccine will be available to me in the next 30 days, or so I'm told.

Thanks to 24 hr news channels, the swine flu sounds like the next AIDS. Theres been what, 100 deaths from this virus? Yea, thats horrible, but you still have to realize how many people die annually from "normal flu". I have never had a flu vaccine and the only time I can remember being sick as an adult was my freshman year of college living in a dorm.

There is good reason for flu vaccination. In history, there have been epidemics and pandemics with large numbers of fatalities. Moreover flu variants have shown a pretty amazing ability to mutate and become much more dangerous. Bird flu has done just that. Add to that the fact that in general, influenza variants are easily transmissible.

So how do you make sure you don't end up having a flu epidemic that kills hundreds of thousands of people or rivals the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918? Well, the one thing you don't do is count on people to cover their mouths when coughing or sneezing. Seemingly the majority doesn't see fit to do that. The simple answer is to vaccinate. Are vaccinations fool proof and risk free? No. Only a complete idiot would think that or imply that should be the case. However, their effectiveness can't be denied: when was the last time millions died from a flu epi- or pandemic? Remember the Spanish flu killed somewhere between 50 and 100 million people, and an estimated 1/3 of the world's population at that time became infected.

If there were no H1N1 vaccine or seasonal flu vaccine and a lot of people died in resulting pandemics, I'm willing to bet that a lot of the people poo-pooing the vaccines would be up in arms because there were no vaccines.

Why? Does mud prevent you from inhaling the aerosolized liquids from an infected person's mouth/nose/lungs? Or did you just think you came up with a really cool quip?

Dont get me wrong, im by no means saying its not necessary. I certainly agree that vaccines are very important. I just think its getting a little more attention than necessary from the news, making it sound like if you dont get a H1N1 vaccine, you WILL get sick and you WILL die...it sounds like 5th grade sex ed

+1. no need to to sweat the small stuff. plus people are dying from it. the vaccine, not the actual flu. and my immune system is spectacular, i can defect alienator and the likes just fine and they're a hundred times worse than any flu.. :)

I'm going to take it. But only because the Navy says I have to. Just like they said I had to get vaccinated against Anthrax. (So if anyone ever receives a strange looking package in the mail with a white powdery residue on it, let me open it for you. If it's anthrax I will be fine! :p
I've already gotten the regular flu vaccine this year. By the way, I HATE the nasal spray one. Give me the shot any day. But the strange thing is that I read an article that was printed out (sorry, I don't know the exact source) that said the WHO says the H1N1 vaccine is pretty much the same exact vaccine as the normal one. It also stated that almost $4 BILLION worth of vaccine has already been sold. $4 BILLION!! Kinda makes you wonder.

This flu is not strong enough to worry about. It hardly kills anyone, and its symptoms are very mild, from what I hear.

Now, if this flu were to have sex with ebola and make a baby, then I might get interested. But right now it's a wimp.
