Question: Why on Armstrong's bike...

This may be obvious, but I just noticed looking at TDF photos, that on many of Lance's bike set-ups, and on some other riders, he has the rear shifter through the brake handle (ergo) and the front shifter on a downtube shift set up?

Weight? Can anyone help me out here? Thanks.

Yes, you are right, it is weight. You will also notice that this setup is only for the mountain stages where they seldom use the large chainring. You will also notice that the downtube shifter has been trimmed down to the minimum. It is not always about the bike!!!!!!
