I see he's moving to Fassa Bartolo, amid rumors of hurt feelings over something Cipollini said.
So what did he say? Did I miss a good fight?

Seems Cippo made a few remarks that Lombardi was too much his own man and didn't solely think about
getting Cippo in place to win races.
A Tempest in a teaCup really.

What a crock of s#*t. Lombardi is always there taking him to the last 200 meters. What Cipo doesn't
like about Lombardi is his ability to win races himself. He steals headlines away from Cipo's
vacation wardrobe. Jealousy of a teammates success... typical primadona attitude. Kind of like
Bartoli being jealous of Bettini's success. Its pathetic.

They certainly he had a quarrel after Gent-Wevelgem, when Cipo delusionally pointed at them for his
failure instead of facing Cipo 2002 was a Grand Cru.

Cippo wants to be the ONLY man on the team. When he's riding, even in stages where he stands no
chance of even finishing in the main group he still wants his team around him bringing him
water bottles.
So good riders who think that Cippo is going to trade their support in flat stages for team support
elsewhere finally come to the conclusion that they've been had.

Stupid Mario ripped Lombardi over the inability to win one of the early classics this season.
Lombardi has taken his talent and knowledge to Fassa, where a certain A. Petacchi will
definatley gain from his experience. not to mention Lombardi will get the green light to go for
a win or two himself.

Cipo is pretty much finished. He's too old and can't win without his team, which he has fairly well
alienated by now... and that comment is a total bust. Lombardi dug into everything he had to lead
him out, and he was often successful. But if he's going for himself, he can't really hold onto it.

Cipollini, as world champion and team captain, expected his men to wait for him. Instead, they
didn't. That's not acceptable for professionals who are paid to ride in the service of a captain,
especially when he still had a chance to get back to the winning group.
There was also a stage in the Giro where one or two Domina Vacanze men working *might* have got Cipo
back into the front group (where Lombardi was present, and didn't win).

Lombardi might have won.
It's not a clear-cut situation. If the 2 men had waited, they may not have gotten back on anyways,
the front group would have put the hammer down. The group wouldn't want The Lion Queen back in.
The question then is: what did the director order the men to do? If they disobeyed his directions,
then yes, they were wrong. If they were given no orders, then it was a judgement call. If they were
told not to wait, then The Lion Queen is complaining about the wrong people.

From what I recall of the Bicisport article, they (Lombardi and local racer Ongarato) 'uh, had
problems with their radios' or something to that effect.

A chapter in one of Samuel Abt's books, I think it was 'Season in Turmoil' but I'm not sure, is
based on an interview with Eros Poli. Poli had spent much of his career in the service of Cipollini,
even as an amateur. Poli felt he was a good sprinter, capable of consistent top ten finishes. But he
wasn't good enough to win consistently and consistent top ten finishes are not worth much. As a
result he was able to make a much better living leading out Cipollini than he would have made riding
for himself.
We don't know about the details of this particular incident. We do know who pays the bills around
that place however. We also know that Cipo had no intention of riding past the first week of the
Tour which would have left many opportunities for other riders to race for themselves. As it turned
out the Tour didn't happen, but they didn't know that then.
Bob Schwartz cvcc@execpc.com
If you ever watch the 1994 WCP Tour video, pay special attention to the look on Poli's face as he
bows while crossing the finish line in Carpentras. There are no words there, but it is a
powerfully eloquent expression. This only happened because Cipo cracked his head in the Vuelta and
couldn't ride.

Is The Lion Queen a prima donna? or Lombardi selfish?
Last year at world's tells a bit of the tale. So does FBs hiring of Lombardi.

"Ha! That excuse was tired about a week after Marconi invented the damn things." (Blue Thunder
reference, btw, just to properly acknowledge.)

Radio problems are very common. So is using them as a convenient excuse.
