Hammy

View Full Version : Hammy

I strained my hamstring about a month and a half ago mountain biking, and now I can't seem to shake
it. I've been resting and stretching, but everyday I wake up I feel the twinge. Anyone have any
sage advice?

Thanks,

Michael

Doing static stretching should make it worse, esp. if not warmed up and not massaged.

Could prevent healing.

Have a PT demonstrate a contract-release, antagonist-contract method of stretching the hamstrings.
This overcomes the stretch reflex and allows the ham to relax and heal.

stop stretching and start rolling the hamstring. i went through a nasty bout of tight hams for a
while... they would sometimes spasm at night while i was sleeping and wake me up in a horrible,
painful cramp! jeez, i get shivers just remembering that.

go to mindfulness.com for some great instruction on how to ROLL the hamstrings, and other muscles.
you may have such deep, tight knots in there that you need to move away from the stretching, which
at this point may only serve to worsen the problem, and get into some deep massage to work out the
painful spots. and yes, it'll hurt more before it'll hurt less.

best of luck! (it worked/works for me :)
