DIY panniers need waterproofing
i bought some old 'eclipse' panniers that are probably from the early 90s. i have fixed them up quite a bit (sewed on new lashing straps and put in new sinch cords, bought the arkel mounting kit and made new backplates). the only thing they need now is waterproofing. at one time they may have been waterproof, but the material is flaking off. is there a way to re-waterproof them?

thanks for the link. do you think i should try to remove the old weatherproofing material, that is flaking off, before i apply the new stuff? it would probably come completely off after a couple of runs through the washer. or should i just apply the spray directly over the old weatherproofing? which bottle should i get?
thanks.

I would remove it. I found nikwax from a link that let you choose the material and it told you want you needed. but could not find that link. but I jsut found it. http://www.nikwax-usa.com/

I have used Thompson's Water Seal to waterproof wood and canvas. Good stuff.
I use a Hefty trash compactor bag --- 2 ft 1-3/4 in x 2ft 10 in
65cmx86cm x 2.5mil --- inside packsack, and inside that, wrap items in gallon baggies. Keeps it dry in there.

god that stuff is crap. it is just wax desolved in paint thinner.
it does not last very well either.
