World Championships a Joke?
View Full Version : World Championships a Joke?
I really believe that the UCI needs to move the World Championships earlier in the season, or at
least require the top 20 UCI points leaders to participate. Look at the new WC, IGOR ASTARLOA
ASCARIBAR's plamares. http://www.team.saeco.com/sch_corridore.asp?ID=1

Yeah, like beating Bettini, PVP, Boogerd, Zabel, Freire, Hincapie et al in a surprise breakaway 2k
from the finish is a joke.
Asshat.

Whenever they hold it it'll always be the same, the stronger rider of the day will win. Igor was the
strongest rider of the day. Deal with it.

That page neglects to mention his win in Fleche Wallonne, and a stage win in the Vuelta Valenciana,
as well as his win of the Brixia Tour last year. Still, no one will accuse him of having been even
an outside favorite today.

Yeah. Maybe they should have it in April in Belguim, when all the good one-day riders are at their
peak. Like that guy who won the Fleche Wallone this year. What was his name again?

Are you kidding? Astarloa is *always* a factor in one-day races.

The only reason not to have rated Astorloa higher in world's picks is that Freire is on his team
today, and Valverde has been riding well, so I thought the team plan would be all for those other
two. Other than that, Astorloa is a known classy rider in one-day events.

WTF? A classics winner is a surprise winner at the WC? And why is that?

Because there were many other, more decorated classics winners, such as Paolo Bettini?
-Sonarrat.
He's a very worthy winner with a consistent (at least 2 years) set of results in hard single day
races, though I much prefer the likes of Bettini and van Petegem. Astarloa was quoted a year or two
ago as stating that at the time of Indurain's peak powers, "...I had poster of Tchmil on my bedroom
wall." -Mike "Sonarrat" <sonarrat@postmark.fishn..> wrote in message

By that logic, Fleche Wallone is now a joke.

I read that the Spanish team strategy was going to support Freire with everybody except for
Astarloa and Valverde, who were going to try to get into breaks, and Sevilla who was free to do
whatever he pleased.
So they clearly knew they had a good chance beforehand.

yeah that makes him the best rider on the day in question. Simple win the race get the rainbow. Win
enough points in the World Cup series and you get to wear a different spectrum.... what exactly is
the OP's point?

yep classy enough to say in post race that he asked Freire how he felt prior to his jump.

what part of one day, one race, one winner isn't getting through here? His entire season leading up
to today has no bearing on the outcome of todays single race.

Freire had a parade of mechanicals, didn't he? Flat, bike change, der problem ... he finished pretty
well, considering.

I'm not arguing quality, but quantity - and his dismal performance in the Vuelta (DNS on S11, after
sitting 62nd @ 1:12.37 at the end of
S10) wasn't encouraging either.

Completely true!

Yep, you're a nutcase. Do you think that the participation of LA or JU would make this race so
different? I don't think so. They should probably be able to follow PVP but they would definitely
not be able to get rid OF PVP, Bettini etc on that climb. And when it comes to a sprint they lose
all their chances against PVP, Bettini and Astarloa.
As a fan of classics and classic riders i'm very happy that the top 10 contains so many classic
riders (Astarloa, PVP, Bettini, Paolini, Freire, Boogerd). It's a pitty that the Tour has almost
become the only standard to judge the ability of a rider. If you don't win or excel during the tour
you're an inferior rider. That's the impression i get based on many opinions i've read from people
of outside Europe (read: Americans). Of course not all of them, I'm not generalizing! At one side
it's logical that you focus on the tour when you have LA as a compatriote and when major one day
races are not broadcasted in the way that it happens here in Europe. It all depends on the flow of
information that gets from here to the us. But it's a pitty that one day races are still so
underrated outside Europe, partially caused by the fact that you cannot transfer a 100 years old
cycling culture like we have here. eg Bartoli's win in the Giro del Lazio a few weeks ago is a much
bigger deal than Miller TT win in the tour. If you would check all the posting's on rbr you would
think the exact opposite. I can only hope that major one day races and classics get the value they
deserve next to the Tour.
Reminds me of last years road world champion.
