Horner was the highlight of the US team. To heck with following wheels....

that attack might have come to something had he been racing at Redlands or Sea Otter, but not Worlds
against the euros.

It could have come to something if the race were more selective. 100+ racers left at that point.

but it was not. he could have won if...the break could have stuck if...but it didn't, so whats the
point ? i could talk about breaks i've been in also, if the race...was only...1K shorter...i could
have....but i didn't.

Do you ridicule each and every failed break? The fact that he is not well known in Europe means he
would have had more of a chance to sneak away without causing a reaction (and therefore making it
successfull). It also justified the other riders on his team pulling less agressively and allowing
them to rest up a bit. Such a move is never wasted as long as the team exploits it.

Your post suggested that it was incapable of coming to something because it was vs. the Euros.

I think that if he gets a chance to race there again, he could do something.

Swj

it had little to do with the race being against the euros but the fact that he attacked so late in
the race with the pace so high. as much as i would have liked to see him stay away, he managed about
a 1/2 lap (6k or so) and probably never had a chance once the contenders teams came to the front.

chris horner is surely one of the most talented american cyclists right now, its a real shame that
his tenure with fdjeux some years ago and mercury (i think) never amounted to very much. i recall
vaughters, in one of his cycle sport articles, saying that horner had everything but the head for
european racing.

Swj

obviously i do not ridicule each and every failed break because i only singled this one out. i was
just making the point that what he did at redlands or sea otter will not bring home the bacon at
worlds against an elite field such as the one in hamilton. and i do agree with the part about taking
the strain off your teammates, any racer should know that, but the team did not exploit the move at
all. whether horner was going for the win or using some pre-planned team tactic, i do not know, but
it does seem that the US team was spent at that point and holding on for dear life, horner being the
last gasp.

Vaughters said he had everything but the ability to adapt quickly to another culture. Horner was a
fish out of water in France (day to day living and training).

He's got the head (for racing), obviously. You don't win as much as he does without it.

If the race was more selective (as it was in Lugano '96 or Verona '99), there would be no Chris
Horner at all in the picture at 3 laps of the end.

Just the opposite of Hincapie who probably doesn't have any problem meeting single spanish senoritas
but may not have been near the front of the line when they handed out the gray matter.

Hicapie is plenty smart. He is just not overly confident. especially since Lance started winning the
Tour. He was starting to break out in '98 and then got swept up in the Lance mania after that. He
still has a few good wins since then, but he defers to Big Tex way too much.

Oh BS! Horner knew what he was doing. He raced against Euros aplenty. If this was spring time
instead of fall Horner would have wiped the floor with those Euros.

I will say that he looks a hell of a lot better without that billy goat beard.
