What kind of $$'s is Graham Watson worth??

Anyone got any idea what kind of a living this legend has made out of cycling?
Legend? Definitely not. best bike racing photographer? maybe.
> Legend? Definitely not. best bike racing photographer? maybe.
I'll go out on a limb and say that Graham Watson *is* a living legend. Having heard him speak, and
seen hundreds if not thousands of his photos, I would maintain that he's essentially written the
book on modern-day professional cycling in Europe. He doesn't just take photos; he understands all
the subtle nuances behind them. Hearing him speak at Stanford some years ago with Greg LeMond, you
couldn't help but be in awe. Any given photo and he knew exactly where it was taken, who the riders
were either chasing down of were being chased by, their place in the GC, motivations... everything.
Not just pretty photos.
The guy is incredible.

Dude, just because you don't know does not make it so. The guy has been a legend since before you
saw your first bike race. He has been at the top of the sports best photographers for over 25 years.
Name another that has half the collection and experience that he has.

not to mention a guy that the peloton trusts to be there and not be a hazard like the TDF TV moto
this year. Always in the right place at the right time and an outstanding eye for composition, all
while seated (mostly) backwards on a race moto. Grab the current cycle sport and check out the
opening phots. His San Sebastion spread is a classic.

Dumbass -
'Legend' is a completely subjective term.
For instance, one could say that Tom Kunich is a legend (snicker).

Some of Graham Watson Photos could be Pulitzer Prize material, like the Kent state girl standing
over the dead college student or the Vietnam airman who was greeted by his family. I mean some of
his stuff is actually that good. The riders respect him more too when he takes shots like when they
abandon or sometimes even crashes. From what I have heard a lot of riders can recognize him and they
know that any given photo could become a huge photo or perhaps even historic, at least in the
cycling annuls of history, if not some day Pulitzer Prize. I couldn't find him in their database but
I am sure he has other honorary recognitions and titles.

How about someone with at least equal amounts of both?

On the other hand, his photos are getting kind of stale ... Do we really need to see a field of
sunflowers each and every year????

Well, yeah.

I know there are a few Euro based guys that are as good, and I don't know any of them well
enough to say.
Go for it.

I think it's his style which has changed little over the years. You either like it or not. IMO,
Sergio Pinazzi and Sirotti are better. I think they capture an emotional edge in the riders that
Watson misses more often than not. That said, I do enjoy Watson's work, particularly from the
80s and early 90s.

Amen. How did I forget him? If you've been to his web site, he has a totally different marketing
approach from Watson. He seems non-inclined to get involved in retail.
To actually answer your original question, I imagine that he probably makes decent money, but not
fantastic money. Bike racing mags have historically paid very little for photos (even his). I don't
think he works for a press agency, and how many of you have actually PURCHASED a photo or poster off
his website?
It all boils down to how equitable bike racing photos are, even good ones.
My guess? Definitely under $200k per year, in his peak.

A cycling film in which there was a piece done on Watson.

What kind of question is this anyway? What is he worth to you?
