depends on what you want to do.
There's mountain biking
Road biking and
something in between thats not so extreme in either direction....
if you want to road bike then you need to find something that fits you that you will be comfortable oon and that you can afford. Hmmm actually that goes for all the biking so just figure out what you want todo than start looking. Bike shops are a good place to find things you like(do the research there) and then you can find them cheaper in the paper or on www.craigslist.org from someone who "got back into it last year but it wasn't really what they were looking for"......

if you need a hand email me

Did you get a bike yet? Best thing to do would be to get with someone who is experienced to go to a bike shop with you to show you the different bikes available.

JeremyHey Jeremy, Pamela and others,
I used to ride the Am trail quite a bit, but not in the last couple of years. I just bought my first 'real' road bike this summer, but I've just been riding around my area (Roseville/GraniteBay). Not in this weather, I'm a fair weather rider, but come spring I could be interested in hitting the trails again. I used to ride from the hatchery to Beals point, to Sunrise Park and back to the hatchery (app 25miles) on a daily basis. So how's the trail doing these days?

Pamela, the trail is great as you can avoid car traffic and only deal with peds and other bikes. They used to enforce a 15 mph limit on the trail (cops on bikes!), but I dont know if this is still true.
Kudos to the suggestion about getting an experienced rider to help select a bike. Try to get it set up the way you want now (as much as possible) and save the time and money reworking the bike to fit later. Theres a couple of great bike shops in the Roseville/Citrus Heights areas. My two favorite are kind of at the extremes: ones more elitest than the other, but both have excellent people working there.
email me if you like at kevinh_01@hotmail.com for the two shops names.

BTW: Im just a rec rider looking to make some mileage and enjoy being out, if you are looking to train for something specific, I have no doubt that there are others here who could jump in!
safe riding

Kevin, I'm also a rec rider. I lost some motivation this winter though. My wife and I both have good winter gear to wear so we could ride but we are too busy most weekends now with other things going on. When the weather starts getting better I will want to ride more again on weeknights. Right now with the sun going down so soon it's dark when I get home from work and I don't have good lights to ride at night anyway.

Ive been working nights so have been able to ride some during the day, but even that is getting too cold for me. I've got the gear too, but cant bundle my throat and lungs up well enough! Always fogging up! Hopefully this year starting I will get back on a dayshift schedule and then I too will have to figure out when to ride. Used to work in Rancho Cordova, picked up the American bike trail right after work and got in some good rides. Have to figure that out though.
Hope you all had a good holiday and will have a great (and safe) New Years...

Pamela, good luck on finding a bike. Nows a good time to be looking!

ride safe
