Follow Up To Chip Timing & Mats @ Finish...

Got my some photos sent to me from a 1/2M a week ago here in NYC & these pix have me at the finish.
Beyond a shameless opportunity to be an exhibitionist and show pix of me racing :) (relax....i'm no
threat to the andy's of the ng)....2 of the pix reminded me of a thread we had about a month ago
centered on a question from Anders on finish times...which generating talk about chips & mats...and
some wise person interjected the importance of running through a finish on past the second mat! Of
course I read that, agreed, and then proceeded to totally screw that up on my next race as
illustrated in the photos.

I'm a sprinter who happens to run distance for the heck of it. I snatched some runners in the last
150 or so yards in an all out sprint at the finish and as always at the finish line raised my arms
in victory (I'm the guy in blue). However my mistake in retrospect was I should have waited till I
crossed the second mat (which you can see) before celebration. Notice the guy on my right in black
shorts...he gave up against me in the sprint to the finish...and started checking his watch for his
time before he crossed the first mat and finish (BAD BAD BAD). Notice the guy on my left in red
shorts, he's focused and running through....

Now in the below pix....on my left is that guy in the red shorts....and he actually beat the guy
that was on my right in black shorts to the second mat. The guy on my right in black actually
stopped at the first chip timing mat....I foolishly celebrated a bit prematurely and should have ran
through the second mat...and the guy on the left in the red shorts...he did it right...he kept
running through all out until he crossed the second mat. In checking the times/finishes it appears
the first mat registered the finishers....however that second mat is there for a reason....and quite
possibly could have registered the guy in Red before the guy in Black shorts......I'm sharing these
photos as they kind of clearly illustrated that point of that thread...common distance of
mats....etc...and two runners finishing wrong (me and the guy in black shorts), a guy finishing
right, that guy in red shorts....and how you could theoretically lose a position due to not running
through to the second mat...

[the capricious nature of mats]

:-) For what it's worth, I did a 5K last Thursday. Here's the URL for the
results

Notice the three studsters right behind me. They crossed the first mat in front of me. The guy who
finished 1 second in front of me also crossed the first mat and slowed but he was too far ahead for
me to "catch" him. It pays to know the technology. :-)

Er, uh, not that I was "racing" or anything - it just turned out that way. I mean since I'm not
running for time or something.
