on another froup, Neil Arthur from 1980s pop group Blancmange was apparently spotted cycling in
North London. This got me wondering; how many other pop stars regularly cycle? (i.e as people who
actually enjoy it, rather than as a publicity stunt!)

The ones that spring to mind are

Kraftwerk (ja, naturlich ;) Nico from Velvet Underground (didn't she expire in a similar way to
Tom Simpson?)

and thats it...........

surely there are others?

She road of a cliff in Majorca in '78 I believe.

FWIW: This is an MPEG of Tom Simpson's fatal last moments on the Ventoux

Has anyone read Will Fotheringham's book on Simpson that was published recently?

Not pop stars but, I saw Lawrence Dallaglio once cycling along the Thames path with wife and 2 (?)
children. I was too shocked to say hello but then again he probably didn't need it.

I was planning to buy it; but had forgotten - thanks for the authors info.

I saw a review in the Daily Mail one thing it claimed which suprised me was that a considerable
amount of amphetamines in the bloodstream appeared to be *permitted* in Tour riders in those days
- Simpson was merely *over the limit* and drug use was commonplace in the sport (and perhaps
still is).

I'm amazed this was permitted though .... Wasn't the stuff *already* a controlled drug back then?

Madonna is always in the papers on her bike. Paul McCartney and his missus as well. Then there's
Jarvis Cocker from Pulp. Of course, nearly all of the Dutch pop stars I have in my collection cycle.

Madonna's an avid Cannondale fan. Various pics of her riding a Leftie in the tabloids.

Neil Peart from Rush used to cycle between gigs whilst on tour, and also did a cycle journey through
Africa and wrote a book about it called 'The Masked Rider: cycling in West Africa,' but I've found
it difficult to get hold of a copy.

Mick Jagger owns a Colnago, whether he rides regularly I don't know.

My first thought was would they be allowed, or rubbished by the press? I saw a bit of the Benny Hill
documentary last night, and horror of horrors, he was seen carrying his own shopping home in carrier
bags! If they're not allowed to do that, then would the press let them cycle? What with things like
Heat magazine (much read by someone at work) itching for embarassing photos as well.

There's nothing wrong with cycling though, or carrying the shopping home. We once caught the ire of
the neighbours by borrowing a trolley (we did take it back afterwards) when we bought more shopping
than we could carry. A bike trailer would be good one day. Dunno what they'll think of that.

Billy Connolly (a "pop-star" with respect to hit singles DIVORCE and YMCA) was a cyclist with the
Drumchapel Ajax in the 50's.

A member of my own club (Shug Brankin) had a top ten single in the mid 90's - "Push the Feeling" as
part of the Nightcrawlers.

High profile people who cycle:

The multi-millionaire MD of a mobile phone company, (Cauldwell?). Alain Prost, of F1 fame, took part
in this years Tour D'Tape and did very well apparently. Christian Marty, Captain of the ill-fated
Concorde was a keen mountain biker (taken in the hold of his aircraft) as well as windsurfer (he
windsurfed across the Atlantic!). http://www.time.com/time/europe/magazine/2000/0807/pilot.html In
an mtb mag Colin McRae, the champion rally driver, stated he likes cycling, but not in the UK as the
motoring culture is wrong! I believe Michael Schumacher also cycles as part of his fitness
programme.

The perception of the ignorant that western world cyclists do so because they are either poor, can't
drive or are rabid environmentalists doesn't stand up to scrutiny, indeed go to a cycling event and
see the amount of motor vehicles of all types in the car park.

Yes I've bought and read the book. I found out I bought my first bike from one of Tom's best
friends, George Shaw in Sheffield! I'd say it is an absolute must for anyone interested in British
cycling racing. I was very impressed with the sensitive manner in which Will covered this awful
tragedy. I too learnt how much drugs were part of the culture of cycling in the 60s. It's very easy
to forget how much things have changed, in terms of science and sport.

Some of the quack ideas around in the 60s in sport, look truly bizarre nowadays. The organisers of
the TDF banned water stops so riders literally raided cafes. Medical sciences knowledge of many
subjects was rudimentary. There were no such things as nutritionalist, and it was even considered to
affect your performance if you were hydrated!

Tom had suffered dehydration and his body literally overheated, caused by a mixture of climate,
diarrhoea, alcohol and the drugs. Will explained that short of collapsing outside an intensive care
ward their was nothing anyone could have done to save him.

RIP Tom. Our greatest ever British cyclist.

That's as maybe but it's the ill-mannered, aggressive, egocentric 'Lycra Louts' who have a
dispropropotionately large profile who drag cycling into disrepute.

I remember reading that Billy rode a Flying Scot. http://www.flying-scot.co.uk/index.html

I think it was Tesco that started loaning/hiring Bike Hods from a few stores a few years ago. People
in the scheme paid for the coupling on the bike. When you took one you could keep it for a few days,
which allowed for doing other things (like taking things to a recycling point) before returning it.

Combined with self-scanning this would be the most convenient way of shopping. Scan items into the
trailer as one walks around the shop. Pay. Wheel the trailer out and couple up while car based
shoppers are still struggling with bags and trolleys. Get home and wheel the shopping straight into
the kitchen.

Someone in my club has the Colin McRae branded mountain bike. Its an aluminium framed bike, can't
remember the maker (aarggh!) but it has Ford decals and a nice Scottish flag.

It's Kona. A few years ago team Kona and Team Ford Focus merged to form Team KonaFordFocus. IIRC the
McRae signature bike is a mid priced hardtail.

Not everyone who's poor, can't drive, or a rabid environmentalist is a 'Lycra Lout'. Indeed,
someone who's poor probably can't afford lycra, and a rabid environmentalist would probably prefer
cotton or wool!

He still cycles AFAIK. One of his programmes followed him cycling through a part of Scotland on a
quite nice bike.
