Herniated disk, surgery, running???

Kate

Hello, all:

It's been several years since I posted. I've been suffering from a severely herniated disk. It's
made it impossible to run for over THREE YEARS, despite periods of great improvement and flexibility
(yeah! yoga). Yes, it's a tale of woe. I tell people I'm a 'recovering runner.' I see people run and
I am filled with envy. Sure, I work out, but running always made the sciatica worse.

My condition's worsened recently; there's a large fragment detached from the disk and pressed up
against my sciatic nerve. I have trouble feeling my left leg and foot.

Doctors say surgery. I want the feeling returned -- I got blisters on my left foot the other day and
didn't know until hours afterwards! I hear good reports from people about decrease in levels of
radiating pain after surgery. But none of those people are runners.

Here's the question for you runners. Any of you out there had a herniated disk removed and been able
to return to running? It would be so nice to return to running, but I don't want to get my hopes up.
I would really love to hear your stories.

And, yes, I've been doing EVERYTHING that anyone should do for this, and I'm still doing it. I've
managed it well. But I couldn't run, and now I'm losing feeling in my leg. MacKenzie, rolling,
accupuncture, aren't cutting it like they once did (alas).

Thanks much,

Kate

Interesting, because it has always helped mine, and you're the first person I've ever heard of that
it didn't help.

Not that I know of, but I'm sure it's been done. Frankly it's much more likely it'll end your
running forever. Have you been to a chiro? I have several herniated disks, and one that's fragmented
into two pieces with a free floating fragment, and chiro's are the only thing that keep me walking,
nevermind running my 9 miles a day. If you tried one chiro try another, and another, until you find
a good one. Give each a couple of weeks to a month, and if there's no improvement find another.

My left outside two toes are permanently numb, along with the large muscle in the back of my leg
between the knee and ankle. It gets progressively worse everyday that I do not run.

Kate,

I was told I'd never run or lift weights again. Then I met Lou Gross, who works with your connective
tissues and lengthened the spaces between my spine. Mostly this was by lengthening the facia in my
legs and abs. MRI and EMJ studies confirmed his work. (I had feeling in my feet restored, and
actually height increased)

His web site is horrible, but give him a call. He also has a new stretching video. He's worked with
olympic athletes.

...together with the organ that occupies a small corner of that otherwise empty cavern that is
your cranium.

Numbness. Wobbots soul-mate for life.

Judging by the quality of your recent posts, I'm guessing that you haven't run for quite some time?
