View Full Version : What makes a wheel a new wheel ?

This is something that has been bothering me for a while and has been prompted today by
Helen's new rim.

The major components in a wheel are 30 something spokes (usually), a hub, a rim, a tyre, rim tape
and tube, plus in my opinion some craftmanship. YEs I know exotic wheels exist but I don't care
about them.

We fit new tyres and tubes often, not a new wheel. If we get a new rim, or new spokes or new hub,
the wheel has to be rebuilt and get a whole new load of craftmanship. I have only once had a pair of
wheels rebuilt on existing hubs, the ride was so much different so I call them new wheels even
though the hub was the same one.

What makes a new wheel ? To me any changing any of the metal components will necessite a new load of
the most telling component, the craftmanship, the spirit of the wheel builder. Thats what makes a
wheel what it is.

Well it's a new rim with a new tyre attached, new rim tape, new tube. Also new spokes & new hub. So
I guess it's a whole new wheel ;-)

Not new but rebuilt. Only new when all new.
