road pedal and shoe compatability

Am thinking of buying a pair of look pedals but am unsure if they are compatible with any kind of road shoe, (specifically shimano shoes). Are all road pedals compatible with any other pair of road shoes or are some cross-compatible and some aren't?

When in doubt, contact the authorities. Many manufacturers' websites have pedal/shoe compatability information; if not, you can always write or call. Your local bike shop might be helpful too.
