Can someone give me an overview of a 6 day race.
Hi,
I'm a roadie who pretty much puts the bike away in the winter (I live in the Northeast US). I've
never ridden track so I'm curious about the structure of a 6 day race. I gather it is somewhat
like a decathalon, a variety of events over a period of days. Am I right? I'm clueless about the
"team" aspect. 2 riders team up and then what? Do they ride events as individuals or best time
scores kind of thing?
I read the cyclingnews.com review but it really didn't explain much.
Thanks kindly.
Andy

The basics are teams of two in a succesion of perpetual relay races (also called Madisons) over set
periods of time during the six nights. The team completing the most laps is the leader/winner.
The Madison (relay) sessions comprise one member of the team racing with the other circleing high on
the track. At frequent intervals (every 3-4 laps) the live rider will hand over to his partner,
literally throwing him into the action with either a hand-sling or by grabbing him by the hip.
If teams have covered the same amount of laps then the pair with the highest points will be
the leaders/winner. Points can be won in a variety of set races during the breaks in the
Madison sessions.
