Forced bathroom breaks while running

View Full Version : Forced bathroom breaks while running

Hmmm

about 1/5 of my long (10mi +) runs involve an 'emergency' bathroom break. I get warning signs of
cramps, etc. and then I have about 5-10 minutes to find a suitable spot to explode. My diet is
healthy, and I do not eat large meals prior to running. I am curious how to handle this during an
upcoming marathon; no solid food for a couple of days, Imodium AD the night before....some of my
running partners in the past with this issue have sworn by the anti-squirt medicines prior to a race
or long run.

Is an activity where you **** yourself 20% of the time, really worth pursuing?

The marathons I have any familiarity with have a fairly good supply of porta-johns, distributed more
or less evenly along the course. You might have to wait a minute or two in line, but I suppose that
is better than the alternative.

It would surprise me if going without solid food would be conducive to a good marathon, but in any
event, don't try anything on the big day that you have not tried on training days. That's what
they are for.

Yes but.....

..the one thing you do on race day that you never do in training is to run further and faster in the
race itself. Some problems just can't be prevented/avoided/anticipated as racing *isn't* the same as
your training runs.

Agreed, Tim. I was just suggesting that I would not suddenly decide on race week to start starving
myself of solid food. If I had not tried some very long runs under the same conditions, I would go
ahead and eat, and then scope out the john situation on race day.
