British Chief of Staff endorses 'hunt to kill' policy on Islamic Homicide Bombers

LORD GUTHRIE, a former Chief of the Defence Staff, this week broke with British government policy
and endorsed Israel's targeted killing of Hamas and Islamic Jihad leaders in the West Bank and
Gaza Strip.

"They are a legitimate target", he said after this weeks Commonwealth Dinner on Monday Night.

"How on earth can you allow your people to be attacked without trying to stop it?" the General
asked. " The only way to stop Suicide Bombers is to attack the people who send them".

During his 44-year army career, Lord Guthrie, an SAS veteran, fought terrorism in Malaysia, Borneo,
Yemen, Aden, Oman, Kenya and Northern Ireland. He retired as Britain's most senior soldier in 2001,
and is now a member of the International Institute of Strategic Studies.

He described the problem of stopping suicide bombers as astonishingly difficult. "I am not
surprised" he said, "that Israel tries to attack the evil people who send the young bombers, who
need the support, and the equipment, who need the direction and the target. It's the people behind
them that have to be hit"

In the same speech, criticized France, Germany (is there any difference anymore??) and other
European countries for opposing the war in Iraq. "The US" he said, have good reason to feel
let down".

He acknowledged that these countries were also anxious not to stir up and frighten their own Muslim
population, with the attitude of trying to calm rather than incite.

But he warned, "without being able to protect our military power, Europe will not be taken
seriously". He called for a united stand against international terrorism,which he said "knew
no borders".

An equivalent argument, therefore, is to say that the only way to stop thirty-six years of
oppressive military occupation is to attack the people who elect the oppressors.

Considering that US actions in Iraq and Afghanistan have killed more than twice as many innocent
civilians as died on 9/11, that attitude is more than warranted.
