Aha! No "z" prefix. This is obviously a truly significant point in your life :-)
Did you do anything with the front forks in the end? If the forks are plain yellow, could you not
repaint the donor-cycle forks? I'm sure your employer would supply a solvent capable of removing the
"banana" transfers without eating the lettering?
Just a thought.
There has been an abandoned cycle at work for a longer time than I have been an employee. It is
secured only by the rear wheel. I might be able to make use of the frame ...

I don't really get it. You bought a complete bike to donate parts to an incomplete bike? Seems like
you could have saved yourself the time and trouble restoring the banana and just brought the
complete bike. Now of course you've presumably got half a bike left over, so you'll have to buy
another bike to finish that one! You could go on like that forever ;-).

Simon It looks the business. Well done. How does it ride compared to your other bike? Twice as fast
for half the effort???? I'm interested as I've been thinking of getting a road bike, probably
something for day rides without luggage. Cheers Graham

Like it Simon, especially the last pic. I actually own a macthing Raleigh Banana racing jersey from
1988, you look larger than I was in those days so I doubt it would fit you.

So what's the story with the forks then? They are definitely bent in the first photo and have
definitely straightened out by the last few. Have you straightened them, replaced them or is some
strange optical illusion happening?

It could be if I end up as a vet category roadie ;-)

I have ridden it fast around bends and it handles OK, so I don't reckon there's too much wrong with
the forks anyway. Simon

Ah but I wanted the satisfaction of riding a bike that I dragged out of the river - anybody can get
an old racer out the paper, but there's something about finding some trash and breathing new life
into it. Simon

Can't really tell yet, I've only been around the block twice. It is certainly not noticeably faster
than my hybrid (both have speedos) and is nowhere near as comfortable due to the cramped position
when down on the bars.
As the experts have pointed out before, it is a bit easier accelerating and climbing hills. I
wouldn't commute on it though due to the lack of comfort but it might be useful for blasts into the
hills in summer. I might take it out next week when I'm off work. Simon

Still look bent to me in the last but one pic ("The finished article").

There's a Raleigh Banana on Ebay at the moment:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2201741391&category=420
Top bid £50 so far... you're 20 quid up on the project!

What I meant to say was that I have an old motorcycle that fits in to the *dragged out of the river*
category and I too was mighty chuffed when it came back to life. It was stolen from a pal and found
by the police when they were dragging the Mersey for a body. Graham

Good work fella.
BTW, really like the composition of the first pic - great photo.
Off to scour my local rag for a cheap road bike...

Eeek - that looks like at least a 25" frame!
Simon Mason wrote:

Did you check them for alignment by placing them face down on a sheet of glass? It's quick and quite
accurate - the dropouts and the crown should touch the glass at four points.

Sure does, if not bigger. I have two of these 25" frames and one 27" Schwinn 1972 road bike. I like
the Schwinn, but boy it's almost too big for me, and I'm about 6ft4in - not much standover
clearance there!

And shows categorically that Simon's original forks were, in fact, bent!!
