start of hip discomfort
View Full Version : start of hip discomfort
I am almost a month into a 2/3 jog 1/3 walk (40 minutes each time) start of my 'training'. Sometime
that day, after a workout, there is some soreness in my left hip. Are there some specific stretching
or exercises which might help alleviate the problem?
Thanks for your experience.

To little information. Are you doing too much too soon? If you are doing 40 minutes every day you
may have ramped up too quickly. Are you wearing real/proper running shoes(this alone is a non
trivial topic and ignore the Nike haters)? What is the camber of the road/trail?

40 minutes how many times per week ? I'd suggest keeping it to a max of about 100 minutes per week,
spread over 4-5 sessions.

Doug,
10 minutes of a heat pad before my run helped me. Seemed to get the blood flowing and muscles loose.
For a stretch, stand straight with your feet together. Take your left foot and take a small step
BEHIND and to the right of your right foot while keeping your shoulders square. For me, my left toes
are lined up with my right heel about 6 inches apart. Bend at your waist to the right, again while
keeping your shoulders square. You should feel a pull along your entire left side, specifically at
the hip. When you get back, stretch again and apply ice to the area.
The heat, stretch and ice helped me. A good rest also helped, I think I took two weeks off and all
seemed better.
Good luck,
- Tom C.

New Balance 715. They are good shoes I think

Sidewalk the whole trip.

Three days in row or spaced with days off?

From NB "A versatile trainer with support and cushioning for the mild to moderate overpronator."
This is an ok stabilty shoe. With this in mind how did you conclude that the 715/716 was the shoe
for you? How did you conclude that the 715 is not too firm or not firm enough? Are you familiar with
how shoes are made? if not go to http://www.runnersworld.com/home/0,1300,,00.html?site=RunnersWorld
and click on "shoes 101"

Probably the harshest surface you can choose.
How would you gage your form - lean forward, erect, or lean back.
Do you stretch after you walk/run?

Hip is vague but take a look at writeup in ITB http://www.rice.edu/~jenky/sports/itband.v2.html the
ITB typically afftects the side of the knee is has an ugly sister which effects the ITB as it
crosses the hip. There is a stretch.
Even if this is the correct diagnosis you need to understand the cause or else it will not go away.
This is why I'm looking to see if you have the correct footware and/or not doing to much.
