View Full Version : Severe morning pain...
aloha, i've been running 40-50 mpw for about 1 1/2 years now. recently i've been experiencing
severe foot pain when i get out of bed and i think its plantar fascitis. the pain subsides during
the day but i still walk like an old man throughout the day due to foot pain. i'm 41 and walk like
an 80 yr old!!
i'm 5'9, 180, so i'm no lightweight.
is there any cure for the pain other than not running?? if i don't run, i put on weight real fast!!

Bad news: it can take quite a while to heal. Good news: Now that you know the signs, you can do the
following, when it might be coming back: Massage and roll the foot and stretch the lower leg before
using it each morning. Tape the foot before running to reduce stress on the injury, see:
http://www.sportsinjuryclinic.net/cybertherapist/front/foot/plantarfaciitis.htm Ice after running,
see link below. Insure you have sufficient shoe support for your foot type. Warm up thoroughly on a
bike or other .... before running. Plan a month or two off each year to crosstrain. Review your
training plan and incorporate sufficient recovery. Roll a tennis ball or rolling pin under your foot
to massage it. Roll a golf ball ... Stretch calves and foot simultaneously, see Soleus stretch at:
http://www.theosteopath.net/Leg%20Stretches.html Gather a towel on the floor, using your toes. Use a
night sock that keeps the foot and ankle flexed at night, or just improvise w. duct tape. Check some
of the exercises given in numerous postings and sites on the subject:

Do a Google on Plantar Fasciitis. You will likely find that you are a prime candidate (mileage and
weight) for this condition. Hate to be negative, but this is one you won't just "run through". I've
been fighting the Plantar demon for six months now. I'm currently taking six weeks off. Found out
(the hard way) that rest is going to be my only hope of getting through it. You will find many
recommendations for stretching, strengthening excercises, orthotics, and shoes. Don't forget your
friendly neighborhood sports doctor. Severity will determine what is best for you. Can't help on the
weight gain except to say I have had to cut my calories by about 25% to maintain weight. It's harder
to learn to rest than it is to get out and run. Easy cycling, swimming, and stationary equipment can
help maintain some conditioning and burn a few calories. Good luck.

Random number generation is too vital a task to be left to chance.
I had it and it took a long time to get rid of. I tried everything: cortisone shots, night splints,
stretching, stopping running -- nothing seemed to work.
What finally worked was when I started cycling and stopped running completely and lost about 40 lbs.
I think losing the weight is key.
Also, go to your doctor.

Pain right when you get out of bed? Check for a raised floor nail beside your bed.

Dude, just some friendly advice. If it takes you a week to run 40 to 50 mpw, then maybe running
isn't your sport.
Yes, Rivermist, it seems to be. I got it while preggers and I gained 40 lbs (AAAAH!!) I saw 3
physiotherapists and the third one did some Active Release Therapy. It really helped but the pain
came back when I started running (with 15lbs left over from the pregnancy). I am on the lose
(weight) and it seems to be getting better.
Other than that- stretch stretch stretch and don't run thru!! Water running is a good way to
go as well.

glad to hear you got rid of the pain. so you don't run anymore? cycling is great but i live in
honolulu where its pretty dangerous to ride. i might try swimming, but i like running better.

Allow me to address you in your native tongue: oink oink, oink, oink oink.
so you're saying you've eliminated running for 6 weeks and still have pain? also, is it harmful to
continue running with this condition? its painful to run, but not unbearable pain. the worse pain is
in the morning as i said. its excruciating!

No, my mistake was running for four months "with pain" believing that a simple mileage reduction
would solve the problem. For some, that is sufficient. Unfortunatly, for me, it was not. If I had
taken about three to four weeks off back in June, I would likely not have to take six to eight weeks
off now. It is getting better, and I feel I could run a couple laps around the block with no pain,
but I'm going to give it the full six weeks then try to come back "Slow". Try some light stretching
before crawling out of bed, it helps the AM pain. You may be a good candidate for night splints.
They are a hassle, but they may prevent you from tightening up too bad at night.

I guess I didn't explain myself well enough. With the cycling, I was off my feet and also losing
weight. At some point, I realized that the pain had gone and I tried running.
I was pretty thrilled when I realized my running days were NOT over.
