Hmmmmmmm, u have come onto a very sensitive topic. I think crank length is often more a matter of what works for each person. If u have a tendency to spin smaller gears then maybe slightly shorter than normal cranks, and if u tend to push large gears then maybe long cranks are for u. Not sure what to measure, i think it may be the femur and/or the total leg length. Dont know how to use this info though...there is a whole thread on this somewhere :S

I am making a very general assumption here but the average crank length for a road rider of 5'7"-5'11" would be 172.5mm and depending on your technique as described above u may like to adjust accordingly.

Maybe u should just find that other thread............

You could try the competitivecyclist.com fit calculator, or try the system used by wrenchscience.com to name a few...

Go to the thread "Poll:Cranks" in this section "Cycling Equipment" and you can get a full run down on all sides to this very "sensitive" topic. The thread currently has more than 99 responses and has been very active since it was first posted.

I have found the thread to be very interesting reading.
