soon to purchase a trek 5900. comes with bontrager race lite wheels. could go with mavic ksyrium sl wheels instead. i'm 160 lbs, clinchers and ride/race hilly courses. any wheel thoughts?

how much extra are the mavics?
i think the bontragers are pretty good rims (mister armstrong seems to think they are ok) so i would try them out.

It all depends on the upgrade price. The SLs and even the Elites are a more expensive wheel than the RaceLite (a fine wheelset in itself).

for the sake of discussion let's assume they are the same price.

I ride elites, because i couldnt afford the SSCs, but i've test ridden both the SSC and the SL. they both ride better than the elites, and there is a noticeable difference between those two and the elites, but between the SSC and the SL there is nearly no diff. Plus they look SOOOOO cool.
If they are the same price, just go for mavics

I'd personally go for the K's. They are great for training and plenty quick enough for local crits. If you end up doing more intense stuff, you could consider a set of wheels for training and another for race only (super light, low spoke count, etc).

Campag Eurus without a question. Lighter, stronger and more aero than Mavics.

I've always been a bit confused by this. What IS the difference between the Mavic Ksyrium SSC and SL wheelsets? I know the Elites and Equipes are the lower line wheelsets but the original SSC and new SL? Different hubs? Rims? Spoke pattern? Weight? Road feel?

Thanks,

im confused. are you talking about the bontrager race lites or race x lites. the trek 5900 should come with the latter if im not mistaken. the race lites are good wheels, but cost about 450 for the set compared to 750 for the x lites and more for the k's. if theres no cost to upgrade id do it just cause of the savings.
