Peak district route Matlock -) Hathersage

Hi,

I'm looking to do a linear cycle in the Peak District from Matlock to Hathersage since this is where
I can get transport to / from. I'd quite like to avoid the main roads, but equally I'd quite like to
go to Bakewell to get a tart since I'm in the area - it would be a shame not to :). Is there a good
way to Bakewell not on the A6? The B6001 goes all the way from Bakewell to Hathersage so thats an
obvious choise, is this any good? Are there any interesting detours nearby?

Miss out Bakewell and it'll be a lot easier to avoid busy roads. Go to Eyam instead and stop at the
cafe there for Bakewell Tart, it's nothing like you find in a supermarket :) (In fact e-mail me a
slice please).

I don't know what the A6 from Matlock to Rowsley is like to cycle on, not very nice I'd imagine, but
the map shows some lanes running almost parallel to it. Beeley/Baslow/Calver thence Hathersage
should be fine. It is a well cycled area so you present less of a surprise to motorists. Beware,
Beeley Moor is quite exposed.

I would avoid the A6 if possible - try and stick to the lanes and 'B' roads.

Bakewell is better known for Puddings rather than Tarts...

when, what weekday, how far do you want to cycle , do you mind lots of steep hills or prefer flat?

flat means a and b roads mostly, through chatsworth(good tourist cafe) to calver then grindleford
then hathersage.There is at least one nice coffee shop with good cake there, on the north side of
the main road just west of the outdoor clothes shop. A prettier route would be through Winster,
Elton, Youlgreave, Bakewell, Calver, etc.. I should mention a route I often take which is nice on a
nice day but lacks coffee and shops unless you come off the hill , for example to the shopping mall
at Little Rowsley below a scary national hill climb route, or to Beeley and Chatsworth. From Matlock
station go up Matlock bank to upper Hackney then up to Flash dam(no reservoir now), left to beeley
moor then right to follow the east edge of the moor to the A619 at Eastmoor.straight across then
next left and straight across Leash fen to the A621( ice cream van some days) which you follow to
Owler Bar roundabout left on B 6054 etc. This is less hilly than it might be but still has a lot of
yellow roads and good views. TerryJ

Thanks for the tips. In the end I cycled from Matlock to Rowseley via Snitterton. At this point I
thought it would be interesting to take a detour down a forest track. This was a particularly stupid
idea on my road bike since the promising track rapidly deteriated into a muddy gravelly path and I
ended up walking out of the forest. So if anyone saw a guy on a bike with drop handle-bars cycling
out of a forest across a muddy field on Saturday then that was me :). From there I went to
Chatsworth house and Baslow. I then went to Eyam and had a slice of Bakewell pudding as recommended.
It was very good so I decided to have a second helping. From there its down hill to Hathersage,
which was nice.

All in all a good cycle, well worth fixing my bike for. The motorists seem more polite on narrow
country lanes than they do in the city too.
