View Full Version : Sore hips from running?

Andrea

Hi,

I'm just getting into running and have experienced the usual soreness the next day (quads or calves
or both). Then yesterday I went for the same run I've been doing for about a month now and I woke up
this morning with really sore hips of all things. The only thing I can think of is that I didn't
take a day off between runs but my distance is still so short, I didn't think it mattered. So now
I'm wondering if I may be running incorrectly. Does anyone know what sore hips from running could be
caused from? I usually do some light stretching before and after I run if that matters.

Thanks a lot.

Most of the time its bad shoes. Buy new ones from a running store and ask for a evaluation
of posture.

When new to running, everything matters. If you're new, like less than a couple months, and have
been running every day, that could be too much. You might want to post some more information on your
running background
- how long, normal running week (frequency, length / duration), etc - so somebody might be able
to help you.

So now I'm wondering if I may be running incorrectly.

Is it in the hip flexor area, ITB area - front, side?

(this diagram is a little complex, but it might give some ideas of where things are)

Lots of things can affect hips.

http://www.fitstep.com/Advanced/Anatomy/Anatomy.htm is a little better.

But also what Rick++ said - check if you're using proper shoes for your gait.

Dot,

Thanks for replying. I'm only running about 2.5 miles 3-4 times per week and it's only been for
about a month now. It's my hip flexors I believe that are sore, on both sides pretty much right on
top of my hip bones. I tried going to that anatomy diagram you attached but frankly, I couldn't
really figure it out. My running shoes are Nike Max Air with some Superfeet inserts. For some reason
whatever Rick ++ added to this thread didn't come up in my newsreader. How do I know if my shoes are
appropriate for my gate?

Thanks very much for any more info!

Go to a running shoe store. (NOT a general shoe store like footlocker, and NOT a sporting
goods store).

They should be able to help you best. Good ones are able to determine your running style (they will
look at the wear patterns on your shoes, and maybe ask you to run a bit so they can observe).

Sorry about that. I had a better link at one time and seem to have misplaced it while rearranging
some bookmarks.

As Rick++ and Ed suggested, if you haven't already, get shoes fit at a real running shoe store, not
a mall. A good store may have sales people with the ability to analyze your gait either visually or
with a video.

Our local store doesn't have that capability, but suggested a PT (physical therapist) who found a
bunch of muscle imbalances and figured out why I'm prone to AT problems.

Here's some links that might give you some ideas. Note: These are just the contents of my "hip
flexor" folder. I haven't used most of these since I'm still figuring out which hip exercises work
best for me, but they might give you some ideas.

Hope these help a little.

Hey Dot, thanks for the links. A recent runners world issue had a hip stretch recently (the first
one in the triathlon/stretch4 link). Now I can check out some of the others and learn what they are
really doing. (some of the other stretches I've seen but never knew WHY or WHEN to use them)

THANKS!
