A cupboard filled with bottles of different shapes and sizes is what visitors first see when
visiting the Veda Medura in Kiribathgoda. On closer inspection you discover that these bottles
contain different types of oils and medicines used for various illnesses.
In the next room unravels the story of the wonders of ayurveda and the cures and relief it has
brought to many people. Patients with heart disease, cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes and
even cancer in its earlier stages have been cured at this Veda Medura. Apart from these medicines, a
specially made oil for people to look younger has also gained popularity. While the medicinal herbs
boiled in steel cauldrons and the strong smells filled the room, Dr. Sujeeva Vithanage went on to
explain how this Veda Medura came into existence.
It was Ven. Dr. Gnanaloka Thero who first decided that he should follow in the footsteps of his
father — late Maranperuwa Arachchige Agoris Appuhamy — an ayurvedic cancer specialist. "The Thero
felt he should use the knowledge he had in ayurveda to bring relief to many who were let down by
Western medicine. With over 40 years experience in mixing and producing these unusual combinations
of herbs, thanks to the work of Gnanaloka Thero many people have recovered from serious illnesses"
said Dr. Vithanage.
According to him the stories of those who have recovered are many. "Patients who were advised by
Western doctors to have bypass operations have come to us for medication. After a month or two when
they went back to their doctors for check ups, they have been told that a bypass operation was not
needed. This is how effective the Thero's medicine is," says Dr. Vithanage.
Seasonal increase
Dr. Vithanage went on to explain that during the Christmas season and even during the Sinhala and
Tamil New Year the number of patients suffering from cholesterol, diabetes and high blood
pressure increases. "The main reason is that these patients don't know how to control their
diets during such times. They eat fatty food and a lot of sweets. In January once the festive
season is over they come to us for treatment," says Dr. Vithanage.
According to him medication for some of these diseases is not necessary if the patients follow a
strict diet. However, at the Veda Medura there always is a bottle of medication that brings the
situation under control.
"Making this medicine is a difficult and painful process. A variety of herbs are first collected
depending on the mixture. The herbs are then chopped, dried and boiled in large cauldrons for four
and a half months," Dr. Vithanage explained.
According to Dr. Vithanage the fire burns non-stop for four and a half months to make the herbs just
right for the patient.
At the Veda Medura the number of medicines available differs according to the disease. However, the
most important and fast moving ayurvedic medicine is the Pranajeewa oil. Explaining the purpose of
this wonder medicine Dr. Vithanage said, this oil can be used for ischemic heart disease, valvular
disease, hypertension, hyper cholesterol, arthritis, diabetes, asthma, leukemia, cancer, paralysis,
hernia, gastritis, peptic ulcers, chronic renal failure, chronic liver failure, dermatitis and
epilepsy among others.
While over 280 different types of herbs from Sri Lanka, India and Spain are used to make the
Pranajeewa oil Dr. Vithanage assures that this oil has cured many people.
Arishtas, kalkas, kasaya and different varieties of oil and tablets are made out of herbs such as
red sandalwood, white sandalwood, aloe-vera, katuwel batu and ela batu among others. "If we cannot
get a type of herb in Sri Lanka we have to import it from another country. But what makes our
medicine popular is that they can be used together with Western medicine and with no reactions or
side effects. Even foreigners come looking for the Veda Medura," says Dr. Vithanage.
He brushed off the ancient myth and belief that ayurvedic medicine takes a long time to cure an
illness. There is no truth in this statement. If the patient comes to us during the early stages of
the disease we can cure him or her," Dr. Vithanage said.
A tablet to stay young
According to him a special type of tablet is available for those interested in looking younger than
their age. "This tablet helps patients maintain a healthy body and sound mind," he says. While 75
types of herbs are used in the making of this tablet it is recommended that one takes four tablets
in the morning and four in the evening together with powder milk.
Commenting on the prices of the medicine, Dr.Vithanage explained that their medicine is not cheap.
"We cannot fool our patients and sell medicine that doesn't work. Our patients come to us despite
our prices because they are sure of being cured," Dr. Vithanage said.
As for side effects he said with confidence that most of their patients suffer no side effects.
However, for those who do, it is not a very serious situation as there may be a slight skin
irritation, rash or discomfort in the stomach that appears very slowly. These can be taken care of
without a problem said Dr. Vithanage.
