The cost of a division 1 team

View Full Version : The cost of a division 1 team

The French cycling magazine "Le Cycle" had a little sidebar on French sports teams budgets. I don't
know how reliable these numbers are. These are for French teams only, and are listed in Euros.

Soccer Lyon (reigning French champion): 70 million euros Le Mans (last place in the top division):
17 million

Rugby highest: Toulouse, 13 million lowest: Mantauban, 4 million

Cycling highest: Cofidis, 6 million lowest: RAGT-MG Rover, 2 million

Basketball highest: Pau-Orthez, 6 million lowest: N/A

Team Handball: (reigning European champion): Montepellier, 2.5 million

The USPS team is reported to have an annual budget of $7 million or so (at current exchange rates,
about 5.5 to 6 million Euros--though as an aside, two years ago $7 million was equivalent to about
$7.7 million, i.e., in two years the dollar has fallen about one-third compared to the Euro).
Before Squinzi got out of cycling, Mapei was widely rumored to have had an annual budget around
$10 million.

Yes Dumbass, unlike yours there was

Showing cost comparsion between major euro sports.

IE top line soccer to 70 M euros(roughly what 85M US) vs Top line cycling 6M a(7.5M) for a tenth of
the costs your could be associated with 2 world champs and be seen in 8 euro nations.

Cost effective vs 70M for Lyon and be seen on french/Euro TV

Dear economics-deprived, not-too-illuminating tushy -

Your point, if any, is not well made at all. Just remember - the other professional sports have
INCOME to offset and ideally to surpass their "budgets". I am not sure the same can be said of
cycling - that it is a direct income generating venture.

Does team handball really produce income?

You may not have seen this sport, I imagine. Yes, it provides income. It
is an arena sport, and paying spectators are plentiful. The game is more
like a cross between indoor football (soccer) and basketball. See :
