New Bike for Christmas
View Full Version : New Bike for Christmas
i've seen a lot of people commenting on the non-availability of decent children's bikes so here's a
comment on what i found for my 7 yr old daughter.
she's had a small wheeled raleigh bike for a couple of years now and since september has been
riding it to school occasionally. however it was pretty limiting for any non-play use: too small
to go any distance, extraordinarily heavy [depleted uranium tubes, i think], nowhere to fit lights
and no rack.
i looked around on the web and found that scott offer a 20 inch wheel bike complete with fore + aft
dynamo lights, side stand, rack, mudguards + 6 gears. an almost local LBS was listed as a dealer and
within 3 days it was delivered. irc, it was about 210ukp + 10 ukp delivery.
it appears to be pretty close to what i was after. fortunately the recepient was also impressed and
my worry that it might be rejected on the basis of 'not pink' proved unfounded. the planned boxing
day ride won't happen but early experimental rides show it to be a good fit and an easy ride.

not sure exactly how heavy but it is not excessive. one gripe i do have is that the cranks are too
long for short legged children.

I find that kids' bikes are commonly heavier than my adult bikes. And fitting adult cranks to kids'
bikes is stupid, isn't it? Our Thorn triplet has double-drilled cranks.

When my youngest daughter was a similar age we had a similar problem - solved by a second hand Marin Hidden Canyon bike. 20" wheels fantastic brakes and the build quality was superb - worth taking a look at if you can find one - they were £400 when new we purchased it second hand for £110.
the best bit was that she could pull the brake levers and the bike stopped.
Enjoy the Scott - sounds very similar.
