View Full Version : How many milke in 2004?

Jon Cooper

Hi

In 2002 I rode c 750 miles and this year set a modest target of 1,000 miles - just 26 to go to achieve this in the next few days.

Can anyone suggest what is a good target for 2004 ?

I have a local 18 1/2 mile route including the Zig Zag at Box Hill - this year I completed this run 25 times so far.

look forward to hearing your thoughts.,

Jon

Whatever you're comfortable with .. ;)

I stopped setting such targets .. I found it pressurised me to ride more, harder and for longer than
I really wanted to ... unless I was actually training (Used to when younger) for specific races or
meetings .. ;)

Your route sounds a good one and to complete it that many times a year is an achievement. If you
want a formal target to aim for the CTC run a Mille Miglia, in which you need to complete a total of
500k, 1000k or 1000 miles in a year, only catch is they have to be in the CTC's DATC events,at least
one of which includes the Zig Zag. See the DATC section at www.ctc.org.uk.
ps you can buy a medallion if you complete any of them.

good luck Martin

A lot of guys in the local CTC have done their first 1000 by March (that's only 100 miles per week,
consisting of the Sunday run plus a short midweek ride).

This is true, and I'm sure many of us have done nearly as much, but not on the basis of 18 1/2 miles
as a regular ride. Jon,perhaps aim for the 1000 within 6 months as a target and then review it? all
the best martin ;-)

I'll second Paul's comment. Don't be intimidated by people who do much greater mileages than you do
- less athletic people like me are cyclists too. My target, having got back to regular cycling at
the beginning of February, was simply to continue regular daily cycling in excess of my minimal 1km
commute. I did fine until my cycling holiday in the summer, continued fine afterwards, and have been
doing a lot shorter rides in the dark in the last month or so but am still managing more or less a
daily ride. Would a target involving riding more frequently give you something worthwhile to aim at?

The other thing is if you do it regularly quite modest and unathletic rides add up to a phenomenal
amount. In the years I lived six miles from my work just getting to work and back added up to 2500
miles per year, and wasn't athletic at all. Mind you, I tended to clock up at least as much again
shopping and visiting friends and just milling about the place...

Well I live only a kilometre from work, and this year I've ridden 2300 miles just pottering around
having fun. But it isn't a mileage contest. What matters more to me is that I've been out on my bike
getting at least some exercise 6 days out of 7.
