Claud Butler Dalesman gearing
View Full Version : Claud Butler Dalesman gearing
I have an old (don't know how old) Claud Butler Dalesman.
I'm interested in the gears - it's a Sturmey Archer 5 speed.
There are two gear levers; the one on the left has 2 positions, the right has three, apparently
giving 6 speeds!!??
Also, & more to the point, I can't work out the combination & need to find someone who can feel me
how it's SUPPOSED to work.

I will pass on the offer to feel you. However, as usual when techie stuff is involved, the great
Sheldon Brown is a good starting point.

There is also a book on Sturmey Archer by Tony Hadland which is for the serious anorak.

I built a bike like this years ago.
The one on the right is like a standard 3 speed high medium and low
The one on the left changes it from close ration to wide ratio
I can't remember which direction the levers work but the gears will be something like
Left | Right | Gear --------|---------|------- Forward | Forward | Super Low Back | Forward | Low
Either | Middle | Medium Back | Back | High Forward | Back | Super High
I think it was an Eclipse touring bike, in the Leeds area pushing 18 years ago.
The customer seemed please with it, I saw it around quite a bit.
