Michel Zanoli died from a heart arrest Monday 29 December. He was 35 years old. The retired
professional, who was battling psychological problems for some time already, won gold in 1986 in the
world championship junior road race. One year earlier he won bronze in the WC team time trial.
Zanoli started his professional cycling career in 1989 with team ADR. After that he rode for Tulip
and Motorola, among others. He was fired from Motorola in 1992 for a fist fight he had with Davis
Phinney in the USA. It was the opinion of our countryman that the American tried to drive him off
the road. Zanoli had 13 career wins.
rijden.Zanoli boekte in zijn profloopbaan 13 overwinningen.

This one creeps me out, probably because we were contemporaries and I've had some heart
irregularities similar to what Legate described a few months ago.
What a tragic ending to a tragic life.
RIP.
Zanoli was really laid back and a great racre. And then started to act really strange. It looked to
me exactly like "roid rage" and I figured him for using steroids. But perhaps it was the initiation
of mental instabilities which often start showing up around that age.
May he rest in peace.

What Kyle wrote would seem to describe my symptoms as well:
I have a mitral valve prolapse, which causes noticeable arrhythmia. Cycling hard never bothered it,
the harder I rode the more even the heartbeat. So say me and all the medical tests. However, the
decrease in resting heart rate could cause a problem. I had a girlfriend once nearly freak out
because I was in great shape with a low RHR, and the prolapse caused a beat (or 2) to be skipped.
Since she was leaning against my chest she noticed when my heart had not beat for several seconds. I
was just falling asleep too, it would beat when it was ready. But maybe for some young cyclists with
arrhythmia it stops beating and decides to never beat again.

According to guys who raced with him and knew him quite well, Zanoli didn't do drugs. May he R.I.P.

Yeah, and that's what everyone says about people who they know who get caught doing drugs.
I don't wish to speak ill of the dead, but things look awfully fishy here: 35 year old male, former
top-level professional cyclist, dies of a cardiac episode. Now, maybe he had a pre-existing
condition, and maybe he was taking drugs for his other issues that may have influenced things, but
it still looks fishy. At this point, however, only those who have access to the unredacted autopsy
report (if there is one) will know for sure.
At any rate, may the big man rest in peace.

Of course, Zanoli went down big after getting fired from Motorola ... He spent time in jail for
transporting narcotics ... He got roped in by his dealer because he couldn't afford to keep
paying for them.
I'm speculating, but it would not surprise me in the least if this was heart arrest due to an
accidental (or intentional) overdose.
What ever happened to the bag of white powder found in Jose Maria Jimenez room? Was it in fact an
illegal substance, and was there any medical indication that his "heart attack" was an overdose?

No one said Zanoli was cool for doing that any more than anyone thinks Bljilevens was cool for
hitting Julich on the Champs Elysees a few years ago, or any other of the thousands of time when one
rider has hit another. What made the Zanoli/Phinney incident notorious was that after the fact
Phinney had to run over to where Lemond was on TV and tell everyone via TV that Zanoli hit him.

Yeah, and Phinney happens to be in the relatively exclusive crowd of people
a chance to bleep it.
Probably the only thing him and Slash have in common.

Zanoli is a Lombard family name. Do you know which was his family's heritage?
