M.D. vs D.O.

View Full Version : M.D. vs D.O.

What is the difference in terms of cirriculum/education and practice? Where does one get a D.O.?

Deemk

Well, from an Osteopathic medical school... to answer the 2nd question.

As far as curriculum goes, the main difference is that in D.O. school you will receive training in
OMM which is sort of a combination of massage therapy and chiropractic techniques since that is
where the 2 stemmed from. But most of the other parts of your curriculum will be the same as if you
were in an Allopathic medical school.

Osteopathic doctors (D.O.) are the legal and professional equivalent of medical doctors (M.D.). They
tend to have a more holistic view of medicine and a stronger primary care focus. Osteopathic medical
schools tend to look beyond the pure numbers, so they have a reputation for being more receptive
toward nontraditional students. The average age of entering osteopathic students has been 26 years,
which is higher than the average of those accepted in allopathic medical schools (24 years old). The
main disadvantage is having to educate your patients and colleagues to the fact that a DO is the
equivalent of an MD. Another issue is that D.O. students have a lower pass rate on the USMLE (91%
for M.D. students versus 72% for D.O. students).

And osteopathic doctors are recognized in only about 50 countries.

Funny how the AOL user is calling me ignorant. Anyway... That comment of mine was CLEARLY tongue-in-
cheek; only an AOL user wouldn't be able to see that (note that he/she was the ONLY one to NOT get
it). I said D.O.'s are kooks because I know a guy who's a D.O. and he's quite the kook. It was a
joke, gtleee. RELAX!
