View Full Version : adding lemon to water
What is everyones take on adding lemon to water. I find that I can drink more water if I add lemon
to it instead of just plain old water. I still get the same hydration, right?

As far as I know, you're right. The little bit of lemon you add to get the taste in it doesn't
affect your ability to absorb it.

I don't like it. At lunch, I usually get a glass of water and a glass of
Dr. Pepper; if the water comes with lemon I transfer the lemon to the soft drink.

I seem to recall my mother telling me that the lemon does something to prevent kidney stones as
well, but I can't remeber the mechanism.

I find that I drink more water If I add whiskey to it.

I often squeaze a lime (the green fruit, not the white powdery stuff) into my water, it does taste
better and is refreshing. I haven't died yet so hopefully its OK. I have heard that too much is bad
for your teeth though.

It's an issue of taste. The lemon and I assume the acidic nature cuts some of base harsher qualities
so it tastes better. The classier restaurants often serve their water with a piece of lemon. If it
tastes better to may drink more. Lemon is also used with fish to cut the "fishy" smell.

Just like an IV bag. :) Look at the classic green Gatorade spooge - a lemon/lime flavored
sugar water.

So we've noticed.

Well, she's onto something with a scientific basis, but really not quite correct. The most common
form of kidney stones are oxalate stones. A diet low in oxalate is recommended for such people, but
it is difficult to do and questionable whether it helps, but low dietary oxalate is the idea.
Citric acid is good at interfering with oxalate binding into stones, so a diet high in citric acid
would seem like a good idea. Citric acid is of course found in citrus fruits like lemons, limes,
oranges, etc.
However, the problem with high citric acid foods is that they almost always contain lots of
oxalates! Any attempt to prevent kidney stones by eating high citric acid foods is probably
counteracted by the oxalates in those same foods. Thus it is far from clear that eating lemons and
other dietary efforts will prevent kidney stones.
For the record, the only thing sure to contribute to preventing kidney stones is to drink lots of
liquids and make a dilute urine. There are some additional specifics for certain kinds of stones
and certain other conditions, but the best clearest simplest message is drink lotsa liquids, stay
well hydrated.

I dislike plain water primarily for yucky taste so I tend to drink fruit juices like Ocean Spray and
to prevent too much acid I do Heineken(not at the same time) - keeps me hydrated and happy.

Maybe more... For one thing you are drinking more. Flavored drinks tend to increase consumption.
That is one reason Gatorade spends millions on taste studies.
Does lemon have any sodium in it? If so, you get even more of a bang since the sodium increases
retention.
