Newbie question on crankset
View Full Version : Newbie question on crankset
My beginner entry-level bike ('97 Cannondale R300) has a 48-36-26 triple.
Does it make sense to change this to something more "standard", such as 53-39-30?

Not unless you need higher gearing for more speed.'Standard' shimano triples are 52/42/30 Are you sure yours is not RSX 46/36/26? To make the switch, you would need likely a different front derailer. You can also put bigger rings on your crank, but again would need a different FD for anything over a 50.

Thanks, you're probably right, 46/36/26, the 6 and 8 look similar (I'm relying on the chain ring markings, not counting teeth). And yes, it's Shimano RSX.
Not sure what it's called, but I've "spun out" (no resistance, super high cadence) in my highest gear going down a hill and have been passed by riding buddies like I was standing still.
I also wanted higher gearing so I could get a better Spinervals workout on the trainer.
But I don't really want to bother with a different FD --- rather save for a whole new bike.

Good point, thanks for the advice.
