The crap other riders are dishing-out to you is exactly that: crap. There's nothing wrong w/ making your climbs easier, and opening steeper roads up for your climbing pleasure. If they can do it w/ a 25t, good for them.
If you need a 27t, so what? On a climb, you will pass the macho dude who can't exceed a 60 rpm cadence w/ his 25t cog if the 27t cog allows you to spin at 65 rpm or higher. This fact is based on simple gear-inches calculations.
Additionally, I am tired of elitist B.S.:
"12-27t cassettes are for wussies"
"granny gears are for grannies"
If you don't need a granny gear or a 27t on your cassette, then you must be a strong cyclist, and good for you! GET OVER YOURSELF!
But if some one needs a triple or a 27t because they aren't quite as strong, or they're a little out of shape, or they are 60 years old, or if they just don't want to push it as hard, so be it. At least they are out enjoying the greatest sport on the planet, and not sitting on the f@#*ing couch.

You can still work on fitness if you are not there already. Find some other people to hang out with that give better advice and don't have sticks in their a$$es.

i agree, you ride with a bunch of elitists!
next week ask about putting on a compact crank and see what their reaction is. ;)
One of the greatest enjoyments of cycling is climbing. Although i dont have a 27t on my bike and ive paid for it a few times. I did a 400mile week in the hills of West Virginia and i could have used it and enjoyed myself alot more. plus if its a 12-27 then you are left with plenty of gears for some hard riding and sprinting if the morons that give you crap are into that.
I'd suggest you train hard climbing in the 27. In a couple of months when you're on a long hill with these guys struggling with their macho 23's, smoke em. That should end the dumb remarks.
Even better to shut the poseurs up riding a triple....
