A Couple Questions...
View Full Version : A Couple Questions...
Hello all,
This is my first post here, but I'm going to make this group a stop on my list everyday!
About 6 weeks ago I decided to start getting in shape again!
I was in the military previously, and the most we ever ran was 2 miles at a time.
Well I started in my basement with just the treadmill we have, and I found it quite difficult
to complete a mile! I worked my way up, and promised to at least get 1 1/2 miles in..but I only
completed it once, so I just kept running 1 mile each workout [ i was also lifting weights
after my run]
So basically, I would run ONLY on the days I lifted, about 3 days a week.
Well this past week I decided im stepping it up, I have a membership at the new fitness center, its
huge, and they have a cool indoor upper track which I like. I've started since about 4 days ago
going everyday, and running 2 miles!
I run for 1 mile, take a walking lap, then run another mile...the first 2-3 days i felt no pain, and
felt very good. But the past couple days, my whole lower legs all the way around hurt about 5-6 laps
into my run. Doesnt feel like splints, so im not sure. Im thinking they arent used to the added
intensity now, and im not giving them enough time to recover, but I dont wanna get out of this new
routine with the running everyday.
If I just use a little determination, then I can get thru my run...
Anyways, any help you can offer is appreciated!
I also plan to research running more, and even prepare to do some K runs, whatever they are..im not
too educated...but I know a marathon is probably 6 months away for me, if not longer...but thats my
ultimate goal!
Thanks for the help guys.

"Feel the burn" is bad advice for beginners, as is Bally's "beautiful pain" ad campaign from last
winter. You are absolutely right in thinking you're probaby not giving yourself enough time to
recover. If you want to establish a daily fitness routine, then go to the gym every day and run one
day, then do strength training/swimming/aerobics/stationary bike/whatever the next.
Are you warming up before you start your running? A couple laps of walking (5 minutes is plenty) is
good (and another 5 minutes of walking at the end), but the "new think" is that stretching is better
after your workout than before.
You may also be going too fast for right now: if you get to feeling out of breath, either slow down
your running pace or mix in more walking laps. A lot of people refer to this as maintaining a
"conversational pace." Not necessarily a deep, involved conversation, but you should be able to
exchange a few quips about the weather with someone beside you during your workout.
I just discovered the other day that you can directly link to the "new runners" section of "Runner's
World" online at www.newrunners.com. Lots of good basic advice.

Very solid advice is to hold off on STARTING training for a marathon until you've been running for a
year at least. In the meanwhile, you would be perfectly sensible to look toward a 5K (3.1 miles)
this spring. There are some 5K and 10K training plans on the runner's world site.

Excellent! I'm squeaky excited!

That's comforting. You were never expected to advance/retreat more than 2 miles per day?

Hardly surprising. The treadmil must be heavy to run with, and your basement can't be very large. Do
you do laps?

Is this going anywhere? I'm getting sleepy...

See? Mr Rodgers told us treadmills were only for the likes of nancy-boys.

You are stretching, yes? You are using appropriate shoes, yes? The track is sprung or rubber,
yes? You do alternate direction on the track, yes? You don't think you're doing a little too
much, too soon, no?
>If I just use a little determination, then I can get thru my run...
And straight into the queue for the sports injury clinic...

You wouldn't listen, would you?

Oh dear, another 'marathon next year' hero.

It was a singular pleasure, my good fellow.

I walk 2 laps before starting my run. Also after. Stretching occurs before, and after.

I am nowhere near out of breath, I feel I could run another 2 miles if it weren't for the legs.
I will look into a 5 or 10K this spring.
--------------In response to the newsgroup Iron Man....
>That's comforting. You were never expected to advance/retreat more than 2 miles per day?
A Routine of P.T. consisted of a 2 mile run. This did not include "patrols" which you referring to
the "advancing" and "retreating," buddy.
>You are stretching, yes? You are using appropriate shoes, yes? The track is sprung or rubber, yes?
>You do alternate direction on the track, yes? You don't think you're doing a little too much, too

Stretching, yes. Appropriate shoes, yes. As for the track, I have no clue what it is. Doesn't feel
too bouncy to me. Track is one way, changes every other day. A little too much? No, I believe 2
miles isn't enough at this point.
>You wouldn't listen, would you?
Actually Iron Man, you had no useful advice to offer. Awesome!
>Oh dear, another 'marathon next year' hero.
Ignorance is bliss. P Diddy ran a marathon with what...6 weeks of hardcore training?

Not really. We fought like hell over who was getting the 'Diet Handbag'. I won. So now *you* get
*me*, you lucky boy.
My running is going fine, thanks for asking. I bought - in a monent of madness - a pair of those
damn 'Wave' shoes. Aptly named, 'cause they leak like a sieve. Be warned, rec.runners!

Tera, you're not wimping out to alternate running days with days of a different aerobic activity for
a few weeks until you can run every day without pain. Even then, most people would say you should
still take one day a week off.
I have been running a long time, and I still occasionally will take a day off from running if I am
so stiff that my running form would suffer. This generally happens now only if I have done some
"speed work" or run extra long, but at your stage it may happen every day for a little while. Run
comfortably or you may grow to dislike your runs. If that means every other day for the first few
weeks, it's no big deal.
glad u could show up!!! stay awhile b ware there b trolls plodzilla

Sadly, yes. The Wave 'Precision' to be precise.

Oh, mine not only let in water from above, they somehow manage to suck it up from below too. I've
never had this experience with *any* shoe before. I can't see an obvious fault in the sole, so god
knows how they're doing it. Nevertheless, back to the shop they will go, which is a pity in a way
'cause one of my new kittens thinks they're her sleepy-home.
Back to Adidas pour moi.

Our team effort was a horrid fellow. I, by comparison, am a mildly spoken angel. Come hither to my

How you doin', William?

I think you could be right. On closer examination it looks rather 'gappy'.
Damn shoes were probably sabotaged by an angry Far Eastern Slave Labourer, desperate to make the
arrogant white man suffer. And suffer I did, so that makes the half-time score Angry Slave 1,
Foolish White Man 0. I shall have my revenge though. I'm boycotting all Far Eastern eateries for the
next two weeks. That'll teach them.

You went from 1mile per run (on a treadmill) 3days a week 2mile per run (on a track) four
days in a row.
Now you wonder why it hurts. This is a common beginner's mistake.
Well the general guideline that no one else bothered to mention is to not increal your WEEKLY milage
by more than 10% (or one mile for beginners). And it's likely better to stay at the same level for
2weeks before increasing mileage. (you went from 3miles a week to 8miles! yikes!)
So, go back to running on alternate days, drop the mileage back to one mile for most days, and only
try to do a 2mile run once a week.
After that feels relatively comfortable (ie, no pain), make another day a 2miler, holding that
pattern for a couple weeks, and just keep building from there.
Glad to see a newcomer. Enjoy the run! Ed
>From: "Teradactyl"
>they have a cool indoor upper track which I like. I've started since about 4 days ago going

Make sure you alternate every few laps direction-wise on the track, especially if there is a
pronounced slant. (IF you can)
When you run every workout on the track the same direction you may find discomfort stemming from the
fact that you are taxing your legs in different ways, at different points simply because of the
slant of the oval. Running all one direction might prove to be harder on the ankles and shins.
That being said, I know that some clubs have rules, suggestions or policies regarding direction and
use of the track..(so my son says.) Walkers circuit one way and joggers another.. and so forth.
