Not good
View Full Version : Not good
Punctures. Usually I get little flint punctures which you don't even know about until you go to ride
home and find the tyre is flat. Not the end of the world - at least you get to fix it in the warm. I
used to get about one a fortnight on the 'bent, none on the wedgie which has armour-plated tyres.
In the last 7 days I've had five explosive punctures on the road. That's more than I've had in the
whole of the rest of the time since I started cycle commuting, including the puncture I once had on
a club run.
Last night I fitted a new tube and tyre. Foolishly I said to Mrs Jus Zis Guy that I hoped I could
make it through the day witout a visit form the p*nct*r* fairy. Hah! Some hope. Less than 500 yards
later Bang! and I was pushing the bike back home.
So I got out the wedgie, put air in the tyres and rode that. Which is a bugger because it's
seriously windy, and intolerance for pushing the wind home was the reason I bought the 'bent in the
first place.
Bah!

Nasty.
Im sure you will have checked but is there anything on the rim causing the punctures?
Just a thought :-)
Bah indeed. You must have done /something/ to arouse the ire of the P+nct+r+e Fairy. Go and say ten

That'sa bit like me buying a 4x4 only to have the 4wd bit pack in just before all that horrendous
snow we had last week....luckily, it wasn't too bad round these 'ere parts and I managed to use my
bike rather than the car ;-) Dave.

No, they're all smack in the middle of the tread.

If you have a slightly splayed rim, the tyre blows off, the tube bursts (could be anywhere) and
the tyre *almost always falls back onto the rim*. If the pucture is a long slash this is probably
what happened.

Since it requires several minutes of spirited activity to remove these tyres from the rim, I don't
think that's the problem ;-)
Actually I know it isn't. It's cuts in the casing, on the main part of the tread, around 3-5mm long.
You can patch the tube and run it at about 80psi but one decent bump or inflate to full pressure and
the tube blows out of the hole, so the tyre is doomed once it's happened.
Trust me, I am a connoiseur of punctures by now :-D
Next stop: the bike shop for a Park tyre boot or three.

I had the same problem. Changed the tyre and tube and still the thing punctured. The cause was
poorly fitted rim tape after my LBS has replaced a couple of spokes and trued the wheel. The edge of
the plastic tape was cutting the tube resulting in a puncture which looked like a split in the tube.
I was furious that my LBS had done such a poor job with the rim tape and received a refund for the
new tyre and tube.

Plastic rim tape is a work of Stan. Velox make the One True Tape.

It's the ABD setting booby traps in the road near your house. They will not stop until you finally
acknowledge the existence of road tacks.

Guy's punctures are explosive. That means that part of the tube is outside the tyre casing when
it happens.

Correct. Todays left a substantial tear in the casing, God knows what caused it. Unless it's that
old tyre on which I hit a flint a while back and shoved to the back of the cupboard... Oh bugger.

After I was knocked from my bike in a bus lane, by a right turning car driver who did not look, I
replaced my rims with double lined Mavic rims.
Unfortunately, the driver never paid up, as she had promised, for the damage repair.
and the p*n*t*re fairy has come-a-knocking at my door. bah. gotta buy some patchy stuff and may as well get a spare tube. running a conti grand prix at the front and a battered mtb heavy tread at the rear. looks very silly.
Bah!

My experince of the hard yellow Michelin stuff is that it can't take the pressure of 150psi tyres,
so the tube pushes through the spoke holes to give a "sphincter tea towel holder" [1] effect. Then
it's only a matter of time before *BANG*.

You mean one of those clever holders where you poke the corner of the tea towel in and then can't
get your finger out. The tea towel, however, drops to the floor as soon as you stop looking at it.
