Is it just me, or has everyone else been unable to get through to the OLN website for days? It seems
to be down. I think I'll try the PING.

I can't figure it out, for some reason I haven't been able to get through to that website- I keep
getting a connection failure. ANyone have an idea what would cause that?

Probably a routing problem between your ISP and OLN. The internet is supposed to be a "self-healing"
network (i.e., in the event that a site cannot be reached by one path, the protocols will route your
request via an alternative path). It was developed this way by DARPA, to allow for a viable network
in the event of a nuclear war.
But, I see this sort of thing fairly frequently, where you can reach most sites OK, but some sites
not at all. Last year, there was a period of nearly two weeks when I was unable to access
Amazon.com. I reported it repeatedly to my ISP. They confirmed that it was a problem with a router
outside of their network. They reported the problem, but they could not fix it themselves.
You should probably report this to your ISP, after taking the normal steps to confirm it is not a
problem on your end (i.e., delete all of your temporary internet files, and reboot your system).

I've had that happen before as well, and it usually is some kind of router problem- I have a
traceroute program that finds out where the slowdown is.

Myth. The design scheme was really intended to create a decentralized network that would make it
easier for diverse military-industrial and academic research organizations to communicate. (source:
Katie Hafner, "When Wizards Stay Up Late" (not to mention common-sense), but what you really want is
IMP P69-IST-5, September 6, 1968, which does not exist...)

Border Gateway Protocol based routers are approaching the limits of what is feasible. Usable large-
scale IP address space is at a premium. Local outages will become more frequent.
The more of the Internet that vanishes behind NATs, the better. However, ISPs will still be stuck
routing traffic to large banks of Class-C equivalent addresses so the BGP problems will remain :-)
I need to get out and ride more. Anyone got any quick fixes for motivational problems? Stu

Ask him http://www.phys.uu.nl/~dronkert/cycling/hinault.jpg or else do what he does
http://www.phys.uu.nl/~dronkert/cycling/backpocket.jpg
Or move to a warm climate, always fun: http://www.phys.uu.nl/~dronkert/cycling/water.jpg (uh, I mean
http://www.phys.uu.nl/~dronkert/cycling/curacao.jpg )
This would probably be very helpful, if OLN didn't constantly change their programming. The last 2
years have been a virtual nightmare of tuning in at the "scheduled" time, only to find cycling NOT
on. I'm glad OLN carries cycling- no one else does- but it'd be nice if they could actually
broadcast the schedule they put out.
