thanks thats what i thought, i didnt get much outa that 50 bucks.
This is just a thought but I have tires on my road bike that have gotten flats from sidewall cuts and have had to put in a boot of patched the hole with a patch and it got me home. I would throw a patch on if it is not bigger 3/16th of an inch and see if the tire when pumped up still holds it shape, if it does'nt chuck it but if it does keep it for your trainer. Hope this helps.
Good thought....it's worth a try anyway. I got a cut about a cm long on a brand-new Pro Race which went through the casing. I used the Park self-stick patch on the casing, but the patch just didn't hold when I pumped it up. Would be great if there was a method to fix these type of cuts, rather than toss a new $50 tire.

There are proper or more suitable boot materials and adhesives. Still only trainer material tho.
Good boot material on the road is a dollar bill. It works great to get you home.
I keep an old tyre that I use to patch on the inside of any deep cuts. I've put up to 5 patches inside a tyre & got 6 months (6 000kms) out of them.
I just use normal rubber glue (the patch kit stuff) to keep 'em in place. I've even raced on 'em with no worries. My current rear tyre has a half inch slash in it & its been like that for two months.
Seems a shame to chuck an otherwise perfectly good tyre! (In Australia a Pro Race would be more like $100!)
Wrap a few turns of duct tape (even better, gaffer tape) around a tire lever (or something similar) in your kit. For a gashed tire on the road, two layers of tape on the interior of the tire, across the gash, work great, stay in place, and don't wear through the tube even at 120 psi. That gets you home. Back at the ranch, I superglue the cut. If the superglue holds, usually in the tread part, the gash is healed (but I inspect both tires before each ride); if the gash separates, usually in the sidewall, trash bin, since I don't use a training stand.
G'day,
try patching the inside of the tyre, rather than the outside, for emergency fixes. I would trash any tyre with this sort of damage 'across' the tread or in the sidewall. If the 'wire' threads in the tyre 'let go' because of this damage, you could be in trouble if travelling at any speed....consign it to the indoor trainer & put it down to experience,
cheers,
Hitchy
Hitchy, don't agree - except if the cut is close to the bead.
I've never seen these cuts expand with my patented retread technique. Still, I'm less than 70kgs - reckon that might make a difference??

G'day gumby,
70kgs?????....they can cure anorexia now you know!..(copious amounts of beer works wonders!).....only kidding (& extremely jealous)....the last time I was 70 kgs my age still had a '1' at the start of it, instead of a '4'!..my point was that I just don't trust damaged tyres, have had a few over the years that i thought would be OK but have let me down.......there is nothing worse in cycling than a tyre letting go when you least expect it. I'd rather shell out the extra $$ & replace it. Besides, you can't have too many tyres for the trainer! (Particularly thru a Melbourne winter!),
cheers,
Hitchy
dunno if this is of any use....?
