Of Canines and Humans

View Full Version : Of Canines and Humans

I've been reading all these threads about this supposed antagonism between dogs and runners, and I
have to say: peace, everyone. Dogs aren't hostile to runners. They love to run! They bark and chase
us because we neglected to take them out for a run. Look at a dog running with his master. Will he
chase you? Bark at you? No way. He happily pants and trots along, content because he's out for one
of his favorite activities: running. And that should give us canines and humans alike common ground.

So next time a dog barks or chases you, drop, roll onto your back, raise your hands and legs, stick
out your tongue to let them know you are sorry.

in that case, shouldn't they be barking at their owners instead of letting it out on third party
strangers?

i would really like to know which paradise you live in? :)

around here, i think it's a 50-50 chance that a dog with his owner will bark at you or, if not on a
leash, chase you.

not that i have anything against dogs. but reality isn't as rosy as you paint it.

but hey, it's better than those humans who bark at you. yesterday, on a 2.5 mile run, i had two
instances where a human shouted/yelled at me. first one was just some kind of a primal scream.
second one was some humans in a car. the car honked and the female in the passenger seat yells out
"hey baby." i ignored it both times.

with dogs, you at least have the chance to kick them. with humans, i'd have to be brave/foolish/etc
to do that.

Hmm. Dogs have a great sense of humor and detest those who lack it. Maybe they bark at *you* because
you're firmly entrenched in the 2nd category?

I spoke of dogs *running* with their human running partners. Dogs walking along with their obese,
beer-pounding owners tend to be in a bad mood a priori, so no chance there. My experience: a dog
running is in his own happy little world and has no desire whatsoever to spend any energy chasing
me. I had one pooch even nod at me when we crossed running paths. <Alert: that last statement
requires a modicum of humor, too.>

well, never mind that i am a grumpy old humorless man, i still have a bit of senility left in my
cells under the gray fluff on my head to recognize (at least) one good point about dogs: they don't
resort to ad hominem attacks, only physical attacks.

well, good thing you pointed that out. harummphhh!!! this growing old thing is really killing my
humor detecting ability.
