Forerunner Software available
Forerunner software update, as well as the Logbook software is now available for downloading. Seems
okay except that the elevation graph is not scaleable. Many of my stored runs have pace/elevation
graphs availabe and many don't. I think maybe the Navigation mode must be enable to get the chart
data, not sure tho.
http://www.garmin.com/products/forerunner201/
Caution! before you download the new Garmin GPS software, download the logbook first and upload your
runs. If you update your Garmin first all your run history is gone (replaced by some other runs).
The new software now has a feature to run intervals. Haven't checked it out too much but it seem
like a useful feature to run intervals anywhere.
Also there is no way to print the charts. You can download them as .XLM files which from what
I could find on the web would only be useful to programmers. These are not viewable in Excell
or Access.
Although the software is okay it is very crude to have waited two months for.

Ha! Serves you right for needing a toy to tell you where you are. If I didn't know where I was I'd
begin to think I'd lost all sense of situational awareness, and I doubt I'd find a cure for that in
a box of electronic tricks.
My Forerunner hangs after 2% of lap download in logbook software and the communication ends, every
time! After this Forerunner does not respond to any key presses and has to be waken up by doing
reset (reset + power button). Have updated the firmware to 3.0 already before first try.
What next?

I can't get that far!
After installing ForerunnerLogbook.exe, I double-click on its icon and get the following error
dialog from the InstallShield Wizard:
Setup has experienced an error.
Please do the following:
- Close any running programs
- Empty your temporary folder
- Check your internet connection (Internet-based Setups).
Then try to run the Setup again.
Error code: -6002
Now, there were no running (user) programs, no virus detection, and the internet connection is
running just fine; so what is this "temporary folder" thing? I did find some folders called Temp or
temp "something" (and deleted them), but whether this is the folder to which they are referring is a
mystery. The error keeps recurring.
Anybody have a clue what's happening here (I'm not a windows person)?

What version of Windows are you running? It sounds like you're trying to run the program from its
current location rather than saving it to your hard drive and runing it from there. Save the install
file "ForerunnerLogbook.exe" to your desktop, then run it from there to install the log book.

Win 2K Pro. And I saved it to disk D:\Program Files\garmin and ran it from there. Hmmm. There seem
to be TWO ForerunnerLogbook.exe files with the same icon on the desktop in addition. Running one of
those correctly installed the REAL ForerunnerLogbook.exe program which now seems to have uploaded
the last couple of months of run data.
Well, after ALL THAT, I can't say that I'm particularly impressed with the program. Days for which a
map is diaplayed on the Forerunner usually don't appear as a map in the logbook. In fact, only the
runs in the last two weeks (except, oddly, for today) display in the logbook.
Oh, well. It's kind of neat to see that huge hill I climb in the park show up as a change in
elevation!
Thanks for your help...

The software is not too bad. However I would like would the ability to
custom scale both the elevation and speed/pace charts. Much of my lap
chart for speed is off the range although the overall run is still on
the chart. I would like the ability to print the page or export it to
an application that can. And it would be really, really cool if you
could overlay your course over a topo map program, not sure if that's
even possible. All but the largest hills are smoothed over... probably
due to the fact that I was using maxium smoothing level on the unit,
will try again with the minimum setting. For about .25 miles the speed
chart clocked me at about 22 mph, I must have been throwing in a
surge:)

Ok. Seems I'm alone. Maybe GARMIN could update their interface specification
(http://www.garmin.com/support/pdf/iop_spec.pdf) to cover Forerunner. The paper is very good but
old. I'd be glad to make my own software for handling the logs.

I think it would be useful if the Logbook program would plot the speed/pace data on the same graph
as altitude so you can see better the correlation between the two.

Markus and Ariel, I am experiencing each of your difficulties. After downloading the .exe, I try to
open it and only get the hourglass for a split second. Only once did I make it to the InstallShield
Wizard and get the same messages as Ariel.
I gave up and successfully downloaded the software onto my wife's computer. The first load of my
history worked. Any attempt after that would open to 100% then start over and hang at 2%.
I'll try contacting someone at Garmin tomorrow. If I learn anything useful, I'll let you know.

I am not experiencing any of your problems, though i did not update the firmware before my first
download to the Logbook software. Since updating the firmware I have downloaded a couple more runs,
and that does not create problems either.
what I did experience though was a hangup on my first using the Forerunner after updating the
firmware. And the new firmware made it necessary for me to let the unit search for satellites again
for about twenty minutes.
Apart from that, I find the interface of the logbook software crude. For example, I do a lot of
different activities, using the forerunner for all of them. So I would expect to have a field where
I could specify whether i was biking, cross country skiing, ski touring, or running. Next I would
expect to be able to do a filter on this particular field. As the software is now, there is no way
to tell at a glance how many km (I do metric) I have been touring, biking or running. Not really all
that useful for analyzing my workouts.

It sounds like the output is in .xml format, which I think is usable by other software (not sure
which, but I'm seen it elsewhere). It can probably be sliced and diced there. One would expect a gps
device to handle multiple activities since that's a reason for gps vs accelerometer approach. At
least I would hope it's not proprietary output like Polar did on their first S series hrm. One
review suggested that there'll be a pile of free/shareware coming out as people try to finish
Garmin's product for them.
http://www.eskimo.com/~joelm/forerunner201.htm look for his notes date 2/14/2004 for updated
information. logbook is about half way down the page.
yea, his opinion was that the logbook sucks also.

XML is extensible markup language. You can export it to an xml file, then import it into excel.
After a little manipulaton of column headers and rows, you can actually make sense of the data.
In Excel go to Data>> Import External Data>> Import Data Browse to where you saved your xml file,
then click Open.

Hmmm, mine (Excel 2000) has Data - Get External Data - then 3 types of queries or import text file.
I can browse under "all files", but I think it'll assume the file is text. .xml or markup aren't in
the help sections either. Access (where my log book is) didn't have it either. But both WordPerfect
(where I thought I had seen it) and Quattro seem to recognize it. I don't have a unit or xml file,
but have been looking at the forerunner and evaluating what it can/cannot do. Thanks.

Actually... XML is always stored as plain text... which is what makes it software and hardware
indepenent. So it is a text file. However, XML can have deeply nested parent/child nodes... while
Excel files have just one level of heirarchy... cells within rows... so it would not best the best
software for trying to import XML. Then again... the data from the forerunner is probably pretty
simple. BTW... Internet Explorer 6 has an XML engine built in... so just for fun... try opening the
exported file in IE to see what it looks like :) Also... if you know any programmer types... they
could easily write a query for you to display your data any way you wish in IE with HTML/XSL.

ok, thanks. Actually, as I was firing up the computer - and my brain (which apparently was not
turned on last night) - this morning, it occurred to me that that was probably the case :)
Internet Explorer 6 has an

Netscape 7 does also as I just noticed.
I don't have any .xml files to look at - just been window shopping ;) I'll have to look into it
though - if I go that route. Looks like there's a few .xml books out there to learn from.
