My near crash ... (Richmond Park).
View Full Version : My near crash ... (Richmond Park).
Coming down the steep run towards Robin Hood Gate on the Jasmin trail, some muppets were officially
putting down soft sand into the bumps, and then using a flattening machine to sort it out. Erm ...
it's still really soft, front wheel wipeout stuff. And it just happens to be on the line that every
single cyclist has taken for ages. My reactions were quick enough, but it is really bloody
dangerous. Will be until the soft sand has been removed by cycle tyres or cyclist faceplants.
Unbelievable.
Any friends of Richmond Park able to bring this to the attention of the proper authorities? I will
look out for wardens tomorrow.

Reminds me of a trip to France during Foot & Mouth. All vehicles had to pass through a deep pit of
really soft sand and, presumably, anti-viral detergent.
As it was dark whenthe ferry arrived and everyone was half asleep you can imagine the fun this
caused the disembarking cyclists.

Apart from the sensible roadies, of course. :-)

Riding off road you need to be prepared for and anticipate such things. Yes it would be better if
they hadn't put down such soft sand but OTOH I presume you saw what they were doing and didn't slow
down to check the new surface conditions. If its soft it will pretty quickly be marked up by tyres
so its only non-obvious to the first one or two through. If you ride in places like Thetford Forest
there are loads of "sand traps" which come and go according to the weather.

I tested it as I actually saw them putting it down, yes I did slow down.. However, it was far more
soft than soft could be. As mentioned "my reactions were quick enough", however I had already seen
the danger being laid down. It's other cyclists, perhaps at night, that have been cycling around
there for years that will not have seen this poor method of repairing natural water-made gulleys.
