I am thinking about buying a heart rate monitor to help me
train for a marathon this summer. Any opinions on which
model to buy and why?
Polar has many models. I have a s410 which I have been very
happy with. The appropriate model for you will depend on the
features you find useful.

You might indicate how you intend to use it and duration of
runs to get insightful suggestions. For instance, do you
want to set target zones and have the hrm beep - with a beep
loud enough to be heard. Do you want to download data?
FWIW, I bought an S410 about 3yr ago with one intention
(short runs, *maybe* 1-2 hr, frequency of recording didn't
make much difference), and my interests have changed
considerably since then (primarily longer runs, ss, ski, etc
and would like higher frequency recording when doing
circuits with 1 min work intervals) and am going to upgrade
probably when the S625x comes out.
One drawback of the 410 for me is that it can only hold one
workout at a time, while the more advanced downloadable ones
can hold several workouts. This is nice if you bike to
trailhead, run, then bike home and can store this as 3
workouts rather than using lap markers for transition. Also
the newer ones use ir interface rather than sonic link. I've
been able to download simple workouts with sonic link, but
have had problems with things like intervals.
FWIW, I depended a lot on the hrm when I was learning to run
by effort, but now use it mostly to log data during the run
and evaluate later. I will occasionally check things while
running, but it's much easier to go by effort level when
running trails since I don't want to take my eyes off the
trail if the footing isn't good.
