Hi Guys, After many months slaving over a mouse, files, brazing torch, emery cloth, skipping all together too much training and racing, and more recently breathing those really wild paint fumes, I can finally report the birth of a new bike. Here 'tis: http://www.atnf.csiro.au/~sjackson/painted_1.jpg http://www.atnf.csiro.au/~sjackson/painted_2.jpg http://www.atnf.csiro.au/~sjackson/painted_3.jpg http://www.atnf.csiro.au/~sjackson/painted_4.jpg These photos are terrible, as they were taken this morning without decent lighting, and of a half buffed frame, by someone who's been up much too late over the last couple of days, breathing too many fumes... Cheers, Suzy PS: A bit of a write up about the process of losing ones mind in this manner can be found at http://www.atnf.csiro.au/~sjackson/bike_frame.html |

That frame looks fantastic, I really like the decals. Did you make them yourself? |

Wow. very impressive. yet another thing I would love to have a go at. no better way to be-at-one with the bike than to create it yourself. Enjoy (and keppum da fingers outta them hurty bits! LOL) sprayed or powdercoated?

Excellent result, hope mum recovers from the birthing process. Not quite up to frame building yet, but I briefly lost my mind (and a few brain cells) yesterday morning while spray painting the new frame for the proposed single speed. Should of wore the respirator mask. Superb finish on the final result there Suzy, you're an inspiration! |

That's great Suzy! I love it when people have the ability to complete and showcase this kind of work. I can't believe the trouble you went to for those 'decals' (right word?) though! You ARE truly mad! Great stuff! ![]() rhino> Check out the link provided for the details on making the stickers/decals. It's the last item I think: http://www.atnf.csiro.au/~sjackson/bike_frame.html hippy

Got a bit excited, did you :-) >PS: A bit of a write up about the process of losing ones > mind in this manner can be found at > http://www.atnf.csiro.au/~sjackson/bike_frame.html That is really great. I read every word of the write up and recommend that anyone who hasn't at least dipped in should do so. You'll be hooked :-) Just a word of warning for anyone contemplating spraying polyeurathane or epoxy based paints. I haven't seen the Imron warnings, but they could be similar. Read the directions! You may need to use a full-face mask with external air supply and even a laminar flow painting booth if you don't want to get ill or even dead. I've painted a few boats with Dulux Durathane. Fantastic paint ... containing iso-cyanatyes, ISTR. There have been some nasty accidents. Suzy, please keep us up-to-date with progress. -- Regards. Richard. |

Very nice job. Make sure you post some pics when it's built up. -- Nick |

Almost gives me the prompting to restore my frame..... might even get onto it again although I saw a cyclist get clobbered this morning out Lidcombe way. L plater R turned and took the guy out. He got up OK and didn't seem too bad but she was shaken a fair bit (good!). GMF how it's so hard for people to judge distances like this. Jock |

Hope to see it at the club some time, instead of that crappy thing you normally ride ... what is it, a Cologo, Col Nagle, something, I dunno. Cheers, &roo |

A Coln Dago. Well known Itie brand with pretty (but poorly applied) paint. Only one gear on the little fish bike unfortunately. Might make the pimple more of a challenge... Regards, Suzy |

My experiences were broadly similar to yours. You mention the tedious work of mitering tubes. I have an electric discharge machine (EDM) in one of my labs and it does a magic job with no filing required. You just use an appropriate copper tube as an electrode and set up the correct angle. Bit expensive to buy for bike frames tho! Another wrinkle I can suggest is the use of a set of die maker's riffle files for cleaning up the lugs and bottom bracket. They have all sorts of interesting curves which makes it much easier to reach the bits you want than with needle files. My biggest fear when I started was bending the rake into fork blades, although it turned out to be easier than expected. You don't mention forks. Do you intend to make one? I lacked your design talents and patience with lettering, so my current frame went stickerless for a time until my son found that stickers from one of his sponsors could be converted into my initials with the artful use of a scalpel. Keep up the good work. John Retchford |

Hey Suzy, Seeing how making the transfers was so much fun, and you've got all the gear set up now (except for brief periods when the house needs vacuuming), and seeing how hard it is to get small print runs done, have you thought of going into the custom transfer business? I imagine lots of the bike tragics (me! me!) on this NG would be happy to pay reasonable rates for some custom transfers... whaddya say? &roo |

willing to pay a reasonable fee to get transfers made up in future for a soon-to-come new frame. Maybe just black-n-white (Ti frame so modest looks are the go)

If anyone's interested I've got a friend who specialises in graphics for motorcycles but more importantly he'll do small runs of stickers for you at very reasonable prices (especially if you do the artwork). Anyway his website is http://www.cutgrafix.com Phil |
