Yeah, that's not bad. What I'm visualizing is something built into the
helmet. So you can either buy a helmet, or buy a helmet with inbuilt
camera. Charging via a USB port and appearing as a mass storage device
so that it's easy to suck the video out at the local cop shop...A rubber
on/off button somewhere.

I suspect you could make something like that for another $150 on top
of the cost of the helmet, if you could sell enough of them. Problem
is that you probably wouldn't sell enough of them.

Design it so it could be useful for more than just cycling incidents and I reckon you might sell enough... Drivers, peds, etc. might find it useful if it was small, discrete and easy to use. I know I've often had moments where I thought it would've been immensely useful to have something recording what I see (as best as possible) on a half-hour recurring loop - even if it's just that dude in their weird-ass kilt or a fleeting moment of natural beauty...

With the cheaper prices for digital storage I think it shouldn't be too hard to cobble together a small camera, flash memory, battery and simple switching...

Not sure what the law says about ppl running around with cameras always running though...

I'd be tempted, even though I am broke.

HOWEVER, 380 lines into 90 degrees gives about 0.25 degrees per pixel.
That's not enough to resolve a numberplate at 5 metres (if the focus
is perfect, and there is no blurring as you get on a real TV set), if
I have done my trigonometry correctly.

LOL I wonder what would have happened if I was there when you flew past.
I did come through there later than usual in the rain and the traffic. I
reckon you would have left me as a sacrifice . With my full panniers
and a chain that was slipping with any sort of exertion (new chain
today, sooooooo smooth) I don't think anyone would have struggled to
catch me. Ordinarily I'd be thinking there was safety in numbers but in
your case I think getting the hell out of there was the wisest move.

I'll add my two penneth to this one. I applaud your presence of mind in
an extreme situation and putting yet another bunch of motorised morons
out of circulation.
Unfortunately, it's the thin end of the wedge. Out here on the
periphery, I regularly get abused, not because I'm doing something
wrong, or blocking anyone, but simply for existing.
Channel 7 some time back not for nothing ran a news poll, `Should
cyclists be banned in peak hour?' This unfortunately is the prevailing
attitude, The CAR Rules.
The State Bicycle Committee was told 20 years ago that if they wanted to
make any impact on this type of arrogance, with anything less than a
million dollars they'd be wasting their time, which is still true.
Whilst I approve in principle of the State Govt. decision to channel
more funding into cycling (over 10 years, it's only $7 million a year:
EastWank is costing $3.3 BILLION, but something is better than
nothing)as usual they're putting a lot of it into the wrong places.
Building more bike paths full of obstructions, an abyss at night, and
often far from direct is no substitute for better ON-ROAD facilities,
which is what we all really need, particularly given Melbourne's grid
road system.
Unfortunately, the big money is with the land barges, and is staying
that way world-wide until everyone realises this isn't going to work in
the long run. In the meantime, maintain you subversion and keep out there.
Cheers,
Ray

Ray, it's $7million a year + the current $4 million a year = $11
million a year. A drop in the ocean c/w road spending, but still a big
leap forward.

You assume they are putting it only into off-road paths and that these
will be crap. It is actually for both on and off-road facilities. Also,
I think you are living in the past. The two sets of engineers & other
council staff I am involved with have both demonstrated a genuine
commitment to providing good quality on & off-road routes & an
understanding of the need for quality, directness, safety & ongoing
maintenance. I think that a learning process is going on all over the
place and that the sort of old crappy paths you talk about are a legacy
of the early days and won't be repeated, provided we are involved and
vigilant.

And positive!

Memories of playing against "kiwi hawthorn" in colts rugby ... urghhhh.
Messy games ...

Makes a sprint finish at a road race look like a bunch of grandparents
playing scrabble over tea and biscuits.
