THey now say (The gp after getting the Xrays that they aint cracked after all. Certainly he is getting around OK. Not riding for a couple of weeks tho. He got the quote back for the cennelli. Its about $600 which just seems insane to me. Means its not a write off. But something is wrong with the quote. They say shifter $280 or so Bars about $70 and the rest is mostly labour and bits and pieces. The front wheel was a pretzel and thats not mentioned. What about the forks. I wrote off a set of steel forks in an accident at a third that speed. If the forks are ok how do you tell? DOnt carbon forks need an xray? The frame being ok is believable. Its a very strong frame. But if the carbon forks stood up to it then next time I am getting a full carbon bike I dont know. its all a little weird. THe quote was from Fitzroy cycles. They have always been pretty good. Hmmmm Dave |

Carbon forks do indeed need an xray for confirmation, although usually if there's been a sudden impact like that, a bike shop that doesn't wanna pay for scans will usually write off CF bits. If CF has been weakened, when it goes it'll go suddenly. It's not like alu or steel where the cracks work their way through. It's sudden. Crack! and you're A over T in agony. Maybe they overlooked the front wheel. Either way it can't hurt to get a second quote, can it? Tam |

Wow, I stay away for a couple of days, and look at all the action I miss. Glad to hear you came out so well Dutchy, and hope your shoulders ok. Dave, $600 sounds extreme, I got quoted significantly more to fix my ocr after its bingle a little while ago. Send me an email at lun15yAThotmailDOTcom if you/Ian want/need a hand with it. Ash |

You don't mess about with CF components, particularly ones as critical as forks [1]. David, go get another quote, and get confirmation from the bike shop. Make sure they're aware of what's happened. The bike may not be a write off, but new wheel (or at least rim and rebuild), new forks, and a good check of the headset need to be added to that quote from what you've said. [1] I'm not going to be overly concerned if a CF bottle cage carks it. I can live with the derailleur body going crack. Just about anything else is going to cause injury unless you're very lucky. -- Dave Hughes | dave@hired-goons.net "The opposite of a correct statement is a false statement. And if you didn't want to walk to the gate you just climbed through the 3 strands of wire fence. It's all changed a little since then. ![]() *Only ever guarded for the annual week long protest and hippy march on the USSR targetted radar dish. |

Morbidly though, (especially after seeing "The Day After" in the 80's) I liked the idea that if it all went to sh*t, Watsie would be well and truly nuked and it'd be all over quickly. -- Pete.B |
