Well no footy this weekend so theHun 'makes' up this story..... Fears as bikes put walkers in danger Sue Hewitt September 24, 2006 12:00am HUNDREDS of cyclists speeding at up to three times the legal limit are putting pedestrians at risk in Melbourne. A Sunday Herald Sun survey found all but one cyclist breaking the speed limit at Southbank, narrowly missing walkers on the promenade. One cyclist, clocked at 30km/h in a 10km/h zone, abused people in his way. And in morning peak hour, more than 300 law-breaking cyclists were clocked with a radar speed gun at Southbank, in the Bourke St mall and on the bike path at St Kilda. Most were speeding at 18-20km/h, but many were clocked at more. Near the Southbank footbridge, cyclists weaved around pedestrians and joggers. Bicycle Victoria said the situation was similar on the St Kilda foreshore path used by 8000 cyclists each weekend. Pedestrian James Gould died after being knocked down by a cyclist in a bayside race known as the Hell Ride. Melbourne City Council planning chairwoman, Catherine Ng, feared a person could be killed at Southbank. Many pedestrians said they were frightened by the speed of cyclists. Julie Davison, the director of stockbroking at Bell Potter Securities, said she was knocked over by a cyclist at Southbank this year. The Sunday Herald Sun survey found 162 cyclists riding at 16-20km/h, 90 at 11-15km/h, 65 at 21-25km/h and 12 between 26 and 30km/h. The cyclists' speeds were recorded by an Australasian Traffic Survey operator between 7.30am and 10.30am on Thursday. Bicycle Victoria spokesman Mark Dixon said major bicycle routes fed into Southbank, making it very busy, but path improvements on the north bank next year should ease pressure. Port Phillip Council would soon widen the St Kilda path, he said. A Victoria Police spokeswoman said Melbourne City Council had erected 10km/h signs at Southgate and police were negotiating with Crown to erect similar signs. They would then fine speeding cyclists. we await rant radio tomorrow...... anyone wanna re-write this 'story' ![]() D |

It is merely parasitic. It is a horrid truth that (with few exceptions) the media exists merely to sell advertising. It follows that any Editor worth their salt would not knowingly (mis)report any story unless they felt that, on balance, it would meet with the approval of the psychdemographic of the denominator to which they endeavoured to appeal (lowest, median or most). Yes, I agree (anticipating the obvious response) by doing so they create / reinforce inaccurate perceptions. But it is the underlying biggotry they exploit, and by doing so they engage in a mutually reinforcing cycle that perpetuates and strengthens the original falsehood. They exploit stupidity, ignorance and laziness to sell ads. Welcome to capitalism! The take out? The Hun, knowingly engages in a sin of commission - as do you by buying it or reading it. So stop. |

How do you ride <6mph? That's almost a trackstand. |

Melbourne Council has steadfastly REFUSED for years to acknowledge the front of Southbank is part of the Capital City Trail. If the council don't acknowledge that fact and put in the appropriate signage/infrastructure et al ... what happens? People make their own rules. |

That's almost a trackstand. I ride through Southbank 3 times a week, and I can (and do) do 10km/h on it. What's your problem? Don't like riding through very high density pedestrian areas at low enough speed to dodge people on foot safely? Use City Rd, or stop whinging. *I* wish the cops would book people on bikes fanging through there. |

There is a 10km/h speed sign through there (several, actually, they're clear and hard to miss). It's also very high pedestrian density. The stun makes a good point, the vast majority of cyclists riding through there are traveling at speeds far greater (more than twice, I'd estimate) than the posted speed limit. We have rules, we play by them, what's so hard about that? It makes not a sod of difference if it's part of some trail or not, it has a speed limit and it's a very highly trafficed (pedestrian) area. Is it somehow the councils fault that people riding through there on bikes are arrogant turds just as incapable of playing by the rules that we expect car drivers to? (ie: not breaking the speed limit?). *I* can (and do, 3 times a week, in each direction) ride through there at 10km/h. It's a PITA, but I can always use city rd if I'd prefer, but the *idiots* riding through there at 30km/h+ deserve a ritual beating behind the bikesheds, with vigour aforethought. |

mmm anyone actually got a pic of the signs? is the zone 'enforcable'? do police waste time with radar guns? i cant see the TMU car (needed to power the gun) parked down there anytime soon... nothing in the 'road-rules' i can see to cover the 'path' sharing - sure but that goes for them too D Bleve wrote: > cfsmtb wrote: > > ScanAustraliaPix Wrote: > > > > > > A Sunday Herald Sun survey found all but one cyclist breaking the > > > speed > > > limit at Southbank, narrowly missing walkers on the promenade. > > > One cyclist, clocked at 30km/h in a 10km/h zone, abused people in his > > > way. That guy doing 30+ km/h per hour through Southbank, deserves to be tied to his bike and then be dragged behind it at 30+ km/h. People on her cry for the right to ride their bike with out fear of being alienated or having people abuse them, but then think it is alright to go speeding through a highly pedestrian area where there are a lot of children as well older people just out trying to enjoy the day and then almost get run over by a cyclist. Two words, "COMMON SENSE", people used to have this before they had to be told how to wipe their ass properly or how respect other people in the world. That is really freakin sad, those people caught speeding, in my mind are as guilty as speeding motorists. And I would have thought "most" people on here would have thought so, good on the Paper for bringing it up, hmmmm maybe it will make cyclists think twice before being a complete and utter, d&ckhead. Equality, Right on Brother/Sister. Freakin sad. |

The path has existed for ages, and yet MCC dragged their feet on this issue right up until March this year until they finally decided to put in signage. Actually I don't think MCC has even bothered to gazette the area as part of the Capital City Trail, anyone care to correct that? This issue cuts both ways, as a shared path user I exercise caution and correct speed while using the area. But unfortunately there's an equal problem, plenty of peds who don't know it's a shared area. And that creates a problem, ditto all the conversations on a.b regarding shared path behaviour such as dithering peds, dogs off leads etc. |

I don't know. I hope so. It should be. Southbank is full of kids wandering all over the place, oldies wandering around, tourists ... general vague peds wandering all over the place. *we* have to give way to them and ride in a safe manner. And I can tell you *we* (most cyclists riding through there) do not. Safe is a value judgement, and what I think is safe is clearly not what the average cyclist going along there diving between people at 25km/h during peak times considers safe. Don't believe me? Stand still there at 5pm on Monday, and just watch. My friends go fanging through there, part of me hopes they have to swerve one day and smack into a pole or some other form of poetic justice. > do police waste time with radar guns? The police do not often appear to take a lot of notice. This has nothing to do with the value judgement of yours, suggesting that enforcing a rule designed to protect peds from irresponsible bicycle riders is "wasting time". |
