Difference is easily explained. With Bright at 300m and Hotham 1821m, if the road would continually head up, your ascent would be 1521m with your average gradient dependent on the road's length. But in reality, mountain climbs, especially long ones going from one peak to another, along ridges, etc, will usually have some downhills along the way resulting adding to the actual ascent difference between the two point. You example would suggest that Omeo to Hotham means less climbing but the truth is you leave Omeo and climb for nearly 10K then you down hill again for a few k's with quite a few more undulations before you start climbing up to Hotham again. All the downhills on the way up add to the ascent and there's quite a few on this ride especially from Hotham to Omeo. Same applies to average gradients. Mt Donna Buang;s average is listed as 6.4% as opposed to Hotham's 4.6%. So on paper you'd think Donna would be harder but that's far from reality. Hotham is a tough climb but rewarding. But hey, don't take my word for it. It's lot more fun trying it for yourself. Just next time I ride the Delight, I'll be mentally more prepared for the climb out of Omeo which I didn't percive as tough as it was. Omeo to Hotham, alas, is only 700m of descending (but they're ace descents!) and rather a lot of climbing. |

You aint kidding!!!!! I was with a group of 5 others who all had triples and while i was grinding, they spun (actually grinded a little quicker) away from me. I did have a 27 but 5K out of Omeo I would have paid anything for a triple. Will be getting lower gears! I'll post a profile of it on Monday when I get back. We're riding Hotham-Bright-Hotham on Sat, and Hotham-Omeo-Hotham on Sunday (this w'end). The weather forecast is ace ![]() |

You bet, the drop into Omeo is one of my alltime favourite descents, it's right up there with Marble Hill in Adelade (w00t!) |

I'd love to see what the profile of all the grinding looks like on paper. It was my first time at Hotham and I can't wait to do it again. The climb, descent and view is just magical. |
