Buying wheels from overseas

I've read from some ebay sellers that there are size restrictions at Aussie customs which means buying wheels will be a problem. How about frames then? Frames are just as big. Anyone out there who's bought frames and wheelsets before??

I've bought both wheelsets and rims on ebay from the us with no problem.

As I understand it there is no import duty on wheels (or other parts for that matter).

I far as I know, duty only applies if you buy a whole new bike.

some bicycle parts are subject to Duty. GST is payable on EVERYTHING. There is $1000 threshold, so anything valued at less than $1000 (include shipping) will not have tax collected. ALL goods over the $1000 are subject to GST and Duty. And just to make your day, if Duty is payable, you get to pay GST on the Duty! Customs changed the way things are cleared last week, and i hear that anything imported now has to have some kind of electronic clearance, so i'd check before i ordered cause a Customs Broker can cost you $100 upwards. (yes, i'm speaking from experience!)

Slight correction, everything posted via post-office there is a $1000 threshold, for courier it's $250.

Generally, $250 AUD is the limit (unless your postage is excessive).

Best to give them a call on the freecall number. My 650c Deep-V "race" wheels were $300 on special.

FYI, chuckchunder was correct. Here's a reply to my enquiry to the customs office for duty on imports:

From 12 October 2005 all import shipments with a value less than $1000 are free of duty and GST. The only exceptions being i) incoming passengers and crew, ii) alcohol and tobacco and iii) part shipments of bulk orders.

Perfect excuse to buy more bike parts over the net .... Any excuse will do

yeah, i checked today..... they told me that anything under $1000 still had to be 'cleared' which meant lodging a SAC(?), this can only be done by a broker apparently....... except for postal importations, where under $1000 just gets delivered.......... the nasty part about bringing it with you on a 'plane is that if you go over the $900 passenger allowance they charge you duty and gst on the whole amount.......sheesh.....
