Default Do you go shopping using your bike?

Here's a pic I'm proud of...

loaded up....

2 bunch of shallots
3 big oranges
5kg bag of rice
2litre of milk
3 bunch of chinese veges

the slicks were suffering though

i think the 1.3s couldn't handle too much gutter jumping

Ha, I persisted with this idea a few years ago when I decided I didn't need to drive my car, but I just got sick carrying all the stuff. A typical supermarket load can be REALLY HEAVY!!!! I hurt my back and broke a couple of bags, so I chucked it. In that particular year I only did ~6000km in my car!

It's pure luxury to drive to a 24hr supermarket at 1am, park right out the front, then (obviously) easily carry several kilos of Noble's water, vegies, etc, etc

I still have a 'shopping' bike that i use occasionally, just for small stuff, but only in the warmer months

yeah, i still do most of my shopping with my car... beacause i got a 7wks old baby and wife isn't interested in riding to shopping

but i love doing shopping with my bike in eastwood cause parking is so bad... normally i do smaller shopping expeditions with my bike.. like bread/milk/etc... urgent stuff rather than the big shopping trips

got a few interesting stares.....

biking all the way - why waste the money on a car. And yes I have a partner, two children and a cat to shop for. But don't use your backpack (unless you are getting small loads) get a trailer, they make the car almost redundant.

I have had my trailer for 3-4 years and it has done a lot of shopping plus beer runs (2 cases fit perfectly in it)

i have worked out that i can fit $50 of groceries under the seat and in the rear luggage box of my 50cc scooter.
$75 if i tie some shopping bags to the helmet hook up the front of my feet as well and drive reeeeeeeally slowly.

i used to ride my bike w/panniers and insulated trunk bag to the shops for 1/2 loads of groceries quite often, but i dont ride that bike anymore. and theres no way im going to put panniers on my roadie!

I cart a fair bit of stuff on the 1.3s but have just noticed a broken spoke on the rear. At first I was unsure as to whether they would take the weight of two panniers on the rear with laptop one side and general day stuff on the other but it seems to be ok except for the spoke.

I have just got my old Apollo three back from a friend who has been storing it for a rainy day. I'm using it as my shopping bike with panniers, it's ok for light loads up to the shops which are 1k away but the car come out occasionally for a big shop. I will buy a trailer in the near future so I can use it to cart the shopping and go touring.

I have to say because i am within 1km of the supermarket I normally walk down to the shops. However if it is only for a few items that are needed i normally ride down which is so much easier.

I not only go shopping with the bike, I take the kid.

Fits a fruit box (or the dry sak) with one week's groceries. Too easy...

Na,

We only go out on that during the day.

Besides, I wear a reflective vest with LED lights built in and we both have red LEDs on the backs of our helmets - just in case it's very cloudy or we are late getting back.

Since my daughter has started at a new school in Strathfield, I'm riding her home with her on the tag-a-long with her bags and books in the trailer.

She loves it - especially the jealousy of the other kids at her school.

Must admit, I got funny looks from the other parents who drove up in their endless convoys of 4WD.

That quickly changed as I simply threaded my way through the traffic chaos and rode up to the classroom door then, quickly disappeared through the traffic again whilst the cages fought each other for very limited parking.

The next day, I got a few "that's a great idea"s from some of these same parents.

Living by myself and not having a car I use my bike to go most places. The supermarket is less then a 5km return trip. I use my backpack to take the groceries home. For my birthday I was given a bike rack. I was told not to use the rack to carry a full pumpkin home because it will bend the rack.
